  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: Holmes vows that Watson will never hear him utter the words "Elementary, my dear Watson."
  • Fandom Nod: The title "Every Good Fairytale" is a nod to Sherlock:
Jim Moriarty: "Every fairytale needs a good, old-fashioned villain."
  • The Other Darrin: The two authors switch back and forth in writing Watson, depending on if he's alone with Holmes or if they're with the Doctor, etc. Other characters also get switched around, primarily in the season one finale, but there are other cases.
  • What Could Have Been: So many possibilities...
    • The authors tried to keep Dalek Sec alive in "The Manhattan Conspiracy," as stated in their authors' notes. He still chose otherwise.
    • Originally, Bram Stoker and Nikola Tesla were to have been in the same episode, but Stoker's guest star slot was taken by George Westinghouse and the rest is history.
    • The finale was written twice, with the first version being written before the authors were finished with the first episode! A lot of changes occurred between the original and the rewrite, given that the rewrite was written mostly chronologically in time with the rest of the season: i.e. last. It benefited vastly from this, as the authors were then able to build upon and bring back a lot from preceding episodes. There's one change in particular that is very, very big, and sets the tone for the rest of the series.
      • Originally, the finale was only three parts. However, "Every Good Fairytale" got so long that it was split in two. And that was before yet another dramatic shift occurred in the story!
      • Beth was originally not going to die. Before even the first draft was written, the finale was going to happen quite differently... until it was realized that Beth kind of had to die in order to get Holmes to wake the hell up.
      • Moriarty was originally not the Director of Torchwood. That came about as a result of reworking Tesla's episode, and that change of plans effected the rest of the season, and made Moriarty that much more powerful and frightening. It was a good change.
      • Beth originally left Sherlock without marrying him. This is actually not as sad as it sounds — the angst of the leave-taking was intensified about tenfold by the marriage.
      • Nikola and George were not originally in the finale, but after their first episode, they were too awesome to not come back.
      • The fourth finale episode was originally named "The Long Goodnight".
