Significant Anagram / Comic Books

Go To

  • Asterix: The story Asterix and the Falling Sky has the Gauls get caught in a war between two alien races: the cartoony Tadsilweny (an anagram of "Walt Disney") and the Animesque Nagma (an anagram of "manga").
  • The Avengers: In the Red Zone story arc, the 'new' American Defense Secretary, a highly sensitive position, is Dell Rusk. Juggling the letters in the name reveals 'Red Skull', an infamous Nazi super-criminal. Oops.
  • Blake and Mortimer: In the book The Voronov Plot, Olrik becomes a Captain in the Soviet Army under the name "Ilkor"
  • A Distant Soil: The comic features the giant starship Siovansin - which happens to be an anagram of "invasions".
  • Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash: Stabe Motel, the roundabout Shout-Out to Bates Motel.
  • G.I. Joe: In the comics, Cobra has a tendency to do this. Notable examples include Arbco (a shell company used to hide their activities) and Broca (the last name of several Crimson Guardsmen). They later had as headquarters Broca Beach on the south Jersey shore, and Rancho Corba in Northern California.
  • Green Lantern:
    • When Neil Gaiman was told he couldn't use Etrigan in Green Lantern/Superman: Legends of the Green Flame, he named the Suspiciously Similar Substitute "Gintear".
    • In Green Lantern: Legacy, Xander Griffin's company Tression is discovered by Serena to be an anagram of "Sinestro". Sure enough, despite his attempt to laugh it off, Griffin reveals he's been a Yellow Lantern all along.
  • Jack Staff: Paul Grist wrote an older and semi-retired version of the old British comics supervillain the Spider into Jack Staff and gave him the civilian name of Alfred Chinard (an anagram of "arachnid"). This came in useful when the rightsholders sued and the eventual settlement meant that Grist could carry on using the character, but no longer use his codename.
  • Okko: Pajan, the fantasy version of Japan.
  • Preacher: The protagonist's name, Jesse Custer, is an anagram of "Secret Jesus." And his initials are JC, so that shouldn't be a surprise.
    • Also "Uses Rejects".
  • Rick and Morty (Oni): The titular duo are arrested and sent to the Clackspire Labyrinth. "Clackspire" is an anagram of "Rick's Place", because he built the thing.
  • The Tick: Early comics has the Tick's sidekick visiting a psychiatrist by the name of Dr. Footcey. The Tick would inadvertently figure out he was the totally disguised toy De Force villain probing the sidekick for Tick's weakness.
  • Scooby-Doo! Team-Up: Madame Tregani is Granite Lady in disguise.
  • The Secret History: Possibly Reka and Aker's names. No reason has been shown as yet.
  • Strangers in Paradise: The Packard-Yerr corporation is secretly run by Darcy Parker.
  • Superman:
  • Wolverine: The story arc Logan Dies revealed that every time he actually died before his Healing Factor kicked in, he had to fight an Angel of Death named Lazaer before he could return. "Lazaer" is not a known angel in Abrahamic mythology, but is an anagram of Azrael.
  • Wonder Woman: In Wonder Woman (Rebirth), Wonder Woman, Steve Trevor and Etta Candy find themselves fighting the militant SEARs Group. They eventually work out that SEAR is an anagram for Ares.
