- A number of episodes are named after diverse media, ranging from other TV series and movies to songs and literature:
- "Bad News Bergens" - The Bad News Bears
- "Bellow Bug Day" - Groundhog Day
- "Adventures In Dinkles-Sitting" - Adventures in Babysitting
- "Eye'll Be Watching You" is a pun on the lyric line "I'll be watching you" from The Police's song "Every Breath You Take".
- "Big Poppy" - The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Big Poppa"
- "The Poppy Horror Picture Show" - The Rocky Horror Picture Show
- "Model Behavior" has the exact same title as the made-for-TV movie in which Justin Timberlake debuted as an actor.
- "Meet the Peppy" - Meet the Parents
- "Coop, Where's My Guy?" - Dude, Where's My Car?
- "Scrap to the Future" - Back to the Future
- "The Partier's Apprentice" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"
- "The Fast and the Friendliest" - The Fast and the Furious
- In "Bad News Bergens", Gristle sits on a throne decorated with rackets.
- There are several in the episode "Prank Day":
- You might find Poppy's morning song to be rather familiar.
- Poppy puts shaving cream on Fake!Branch's hands, which he "accidentally puts it on himself" when he is tickled by her to "wake up"—something that DreamWorks had already done before.
- Smidge, while in her "revenge streak":
- Spins her head through 360º.
- "Here's SMIDGEY!" This also counts as an example of "Here's Johnny!" Homage.
- Has her hair fall straight down her body while creepily walking towards Branch and Poppy.
- Gallagher is referenced twice via the act of smashing things, in "Remote Out Of Control" and "Guy Misses Out".
- In "The Party Games", Harper stuck in a body cast struggles to perform well at charades, but everyone has fun making random guesses anyway. Poppy suggests she's a fun-loving ring-tailed lemur, while Branch guesses she's a Norse teenager with progressive views riding a dragon.
- Nova Swift, given both her name and fashionista nature, is likely a reference to Taylor Swift.
- "Pillow War" contains several - when the war is still small, there are several scenes framed to be like West Side Story. When it escalates, it turns into Braveheart, while Branch gives a Rousing Speech that has more than a few parallels to the St. Crispin's Day speech.
- "Three Trolls-Keteers" is clearly a parody of ¡Three Amigos!.
- The background music at the ending of "Branch Bum" is made to sound like the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song.
- In "Glitter Loss":
- The entrance of the temple has a platform similar to DanceDanceRevolution.
- Smidge makes a series of dances popularized by Michael Jackson.
- The entire plot of "Mr. Glittercakes" is a reference to the M*A*S*H episode "Tuttle".
- Dennis' introduction scene is based on Mary Poppins.
- Guy Diamond's pose and spotlight in "The Partier's Apprentice" are a reference to Batman.
- The video game featured in "Troll Playing Game" is based on Dungeons & Dragons, as a tribute to the fact that a number of the series' creators are regular players of it.
- The stories told in the "Trolly Tales" episodes are adaptations of fairy tales, greek myths and nursery rhymes, with the names of the characters from the former two often being a pun between those from the original stories' characters and the Trolls who play the characters. Keith's story in the second episode, however, stands out by starting with like a myth and then jumping to a huge reference to Star Wars.
- Icarus shouting "Noooooo!" is also a reference to Darth Vader's Big "NO!" in Revenge of the Sith.
- The witch's time machine in Keith's story from the first episode is another reference to Back to the Future.
