Kamen Rider SD was a mini-franchise based on the Kamen Rider series, released in the early 1990s. Originally a 1990 manga, it starred super deformed versions of the various Kamen Riders featured from the original to Black RX placed in a cartoonish world, where all past villains have banded together under the command of the "Great Leader" under the name "Gran Shocker."

The first manga was Kamen Rider SD: Mighty Riders, written by Kei Aoki and published in Comic BonBon's DX BonBon imprint. The next edition was Kamen Rider SD: Hurricane Legendnote  written by Hiroshi Katou and published in CoroCoro Comic from January 1992 through April 1993. Takeshi Tamai's Kamen Rider SD: Wild Running Smile Schoolnote  was published in Shogakukan's family comic magazines. Minoru Nonaka's Kamen Rider SD was published in TV Land from October 1993 to February 1997. Kamen Rider SD: Bottakun by Yuuji Hosoi has been published in Televi-Kun since December 1999.

A video game for the Famicom based on the manga was released on January 22, 1993, followed by an OVA titled Kamen Rider SD: Kaiki!? Kumo Otoko released on January 23, 1993.

The first video game released under the Kamen Rider SD name was Kamen Rider SD: The Ambition of Gran Shocker for the Famicom in January 22, 1993. Kamen Rider SD: Sortie!! Rider Machines was released for the Super Famicom on July 9, 1993. The final video game released with the Kamen Rider SD characters was Kamen Rider SD: Run! Mighty Riders for the Game Boy on August 20, 1993.

  • Big Bad: Majin Great Leadernote  of GranShocker, who appears to be a new incarnation of the original Great Leader of Shocker.
  • Demoted to Extra: Kamen Rider Shin (Kamen Rider #13) makes a cameo in the OVA.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: SD follows the Super-Deformed Kamen Riders.
  • Hijacked by Ganon: Gran Shocker's Great Leader is revealed to be Doctor Shinigami, who was originally The Dragon.
  • Home Base: The Rider Carrier serves as home to the Riders and Tachibana. It features in both the OVA and the Sortie!! Rider Machines.
  • Humongous Mecha: On closer inspection, the Great Leader's body appears to be this, with a caped figure in the forehead. In the concluding chapter of the manga, it was revealed that the "Great Leader" was indeed a mecha piloted by none other than Doctor Shinigami, an Shocker executive.
  • Legion of Doom: Gran Shocker, an alliance of Kamen Rider villains.
  • The Mentor: Tobei Tachibana, whose live-action incarnation mentored the Seven Legendary Riders, acts as this for all 11 Riders.
  • Mooks: Gran Shocker's Sentoninnote  wear blue and yellow uniforms with the Gran Shocker insignia on their forehead, appearing not too disimilar to the Gel-Shocker Sentonin from the original series. They appear in both Sortie!! Rider Machines and the OVA.
  • Mythology Gag: The Rider Carrier appears to be derived from an unused spaceship design from Kamen Rider ZO.
  • Power Trio: The Kamen Riders are divided into these.
  • Super-Deformed: Take a guess what "SD" stands for.
  • Toyline-Exclusive Character: The SD incarnation of ZO (Kamen Rider #14) does not appear in the manga, OVA or video games, but was released as a soft vinyl figure in one of the SD toylines along with Kamen Rider Shin.
  • What If?: ...the Showa Kamen Riders were Super-Deformed?
