  • Evil Dead 2: After Ash severs his deadite-possessed arm, which comes to life and attacks him, Ash immediately had the living appendage trapped under a bucket and piles a number of books on it to stop the hand from crawling out. The book on top? "A Farewell to Arms".
  • In Silver Linings Playbook, Pat reads the book... then screams "WHAT THE FUCK?" and throws it out the window.
  • Licence to Kill: When Bond's licence to kill is revoked and asked to hand over his gun at the Hemingway House, he comments, before leaving the scene with his weapon.

Literature

  • In My Dark Vanessa, Vanessa's English class reads the novel. When Hannah Levesque calls it boring, Strane snaps that Hemingway would probably find her boring.
  • Sven Hassel homages (or plagiarizes) lines in Monte Cassino, his own novel set in Italy, this time during World War 2.

  • Futurama used the title of the book for one of its episodes.
  • House of Mouse: In the short "How to Be Smart", the narrator mentions this book when going over middle-school literature, and Goofy's arms promptly fall off.
  • Family Guy: Peter wakes up in the hospital, and Doctor Hartman tells him some news by holding up the book. Peter gasps—"I fell in love with a World War I nurse?"—and Doctor Hartman deadpans that there's no way Peter actually read the book.
