Recap / Yu Yu Hakusho 2023 S 1 E 4 Episode 4

Go To

Team Urameshi arrives on Sakyo's island. Hiei soon leaves the group, preferring to work alone. When Karasu attacks, Kurama fights him alone while Yusuke and Kuwabara go on without him. The pair split up while Hiei encounters Bui.

Keiko and Yukina bond in confinement. When Keiko lays on the ground gowning in pain, a guard walks in to check on her, only for her to put him into a choke hold until he passes out and steals his key card, freeing Yukina. Keiko punches Kuwabara when they cross paths before realizing who he is.

Kurama and Hiei's battles intensify. Kurama reverts to his spirit fox form and unleashes carnivorous plants on Karasu while Bui removes his armor. Kurama runs out of energy and reverts to human form, only for Karasu to die from a parasitic plant that had been inserted into his blood. Bui's increased power forces Hiei to unleash the dragon of the darkness flame, which destroys him.

Kuwabara and the girls accidentally release a yokai while trying to find the way out. It chases them around for a while until they trap it on the other side of a shutter door. They encounter Elder Toguro and Yusuke enters the arena, confronting Younger Toguro. Sakyo promises to release Keiko if Yusuke wins, despite knowing she has already escaped.

In the sinkhole, the portal has opened.

Tropes

  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Kurama can transform into Yoko Kurama without the aid of potions or magic smoke. He is also able to kill Karasu with the seed of the death plant, something he was able to counter in the anime and manga.
    • Keiko is normally the Damsel in Distress when it comes to kidnappings, having to at best survive until she is saved. Here she chokes out a guard and breaks Yukina out of her cell.
  • Body Horror: We see the seed of the death plant spread itself throughout Karasu's body and wrap around his heart, with its stems shooting out of him and blooming.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Keiko doesn't normally fight but when she does she relies on sneak attacks, using the wrestling moves Yusuke taught her and Groin Attack.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Hiei unleashes the dragon of the darkness flame to kill Bui but his arm is blackened as a result. He claims he can still fight.
  • Death by Adaptation: Hiei spares Bui in the original but kills him here.
  • Defiant Captive: Keiko chokes out a guard and steals his key guard to escape. She can talk Yukina into going with her.
  • Depraved Homosexual: Karasu has a disturbing fixation on Kurama and tries to kill him without damaging his face.
  • Friend or Foe?: When Keiko sees a shadow coming up the passageway she hides around the corner and subjects Kuwabara to a Groin Attack when he comes out before realizing it's him.
  • Having a Blast: Karasu fills the battlefield with invisible explosives. Kurama has to avoid them while fighting.
  • Healing Hands: Yukina heals Keiko's hand with light from her hands.
  • It's Probably Nothing: After the girls escape one of them stumbles on the metal stairs, making a loud sound. Below a guard looks around for a moment before going on his way.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: Hiei runs off shortly after they arrive on the island, preferring to work alone. When Karasu attacks, Kurama tells the others to go on ahead while he fights him. Then Yusuke and Kuwabara split up to search for the girls.
  • Love at First Sight: Kuwabara falls in love with Yukina the moment he lays eyes on her.
  • Man-Eating Plant: Yoko Kurama grows several carnivorous plants and has them attack Karasu.
  • Russian Roulette: Sakyo plays this to show Tarukane just how serious he takes gambling... complete with five loaded chambers instead of just one. He still wins, to Tarukane's utter shock.
  • Shed Armor, Gain Speed: Bui removes his armor to unleash his full power and get faster in his battle against Hiei.
  • Sick Captive Scam: Keiko pretends to be sick to trick a guard into entering her cell, then knocks him out so she and Yukina can escape.
  • Super Mode: Kurama transforms into his spirit fox form, getting white hair and becoming a Little Bit Beastly.
  • Survivor Guilt: Yukina feels guilty for the death of the last man who tried to save her and tells Keiko to go without her. She manages to convince her to come with her.
  • Transformation Horror: Elder Toguro is a shapeshifter in the most disturbing way, moving his head around and showing some of his insides as he alters his form, seemingly for no reason other than he likes to terrify people. It looks particularly creepy when Kuwabara strikes him in the shoulder with a pipe.
