Recap / Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS Ep 60 Brave Max The Loser

Go To

Emma and Aoi are trying to figure out who Playmaker is, and one of their leads is Shima, who claims to be Playmaker's friend. When Ghost Girl finds Brave Max, Shima's avatar in LINK VRAINS, she challenges him to a Duel.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Blue Girl is clearly unhappy that she has to put on a Blue Angel show for a plan that got them no results.
  • Breather Episode: Subverted. While the whole Ghost Girl vs Brave Max Duel is amusing, the ending is anything but relaxing.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Ghost Girl easily finishes off Brave Max in three turns without allowing him to touch her LP.
  • Death by Irony: Non-fatal Example. Brave Max is defeated when he sacrifices a lot of LP to summon strong monsters, causing him to go down in one hit. The Knight of Hanoi he previously dueled did the exact same thing, which Naoki exploited using Cyberse Wizard’s Effect.
  • Deliberate Injury Gambit: Brave Max pays a total of 2000 LP to Summon two copies of "Green Baboon" so that he can facilitate the Link Summoning of "Metal Baboon". This backfires on him hard, however, after "Metal Baboon" is returned to his Extra Deck.
  • Dramatic Irony: With Akira asking Aoi and Emma if they know Playmaker's identity in real life, Aoi remarks that a person's true nature doesn't change between the virtual world and real-life, and if Playmaker's nearby, they'll know. Cut to the next scene showing Aoi walking past Yuasku and Takeru at school, none the wiser.
  • Exact Words: Ghost Girl promises she won't attack Brave Max directly three times.
  • Foreshadowing: Earlier in the episode, Akira discusses Playmaker's interest in the gate with the bounty hunters, after which Blood Shepherd promptly logs out and is then seen working on his computer...
  • Heroic Sacrifice: As Playmaker gets sucked into Blood Shepherd's trap, Soulburner takes the bait instead and bumps Playmaker out of the way.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Had Brave Max kept both of his "Green Baboons" on his Field instead of relying on "Metal Baboon", he would've at least stood a decent chance against Ghost Girl.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Brave Max's claim that "Metal Baboon" can't be returned to his hand because it's a Link Monster baffles both Ghost Girl and Blue Girl. As any Duelist should know, Link Monsters (and Extra Deck monsters in general) are valid targets for bounce effects like that of "Altergeist Silquitous", except it returns the card to the Extra Deck instead of the hand.
  • Lured into a Trap:
    • The gate in one of the top floating islands located above the restricted area turns out to be a trap, set up by Blood Shepherd to suck Playmaker in.
    • Prior to this, a more Played for Laughs version happens when Aoi and Emma stage a Blue Angel event in order to lure Brave Max.
  • Mirthless Laughter: Brave Max can only laugh nervously when he realises Ghost Girl's "Altergist Hexstia" has enough ATK to finish him off and win her the Duel.
  • Saying Too Much: After Shima openly confesses to being Playmaker's best friend, Aoi approaches him for information about Playmaker's real world identity.
  • Shout-Out: After working up the resolve to keep dueling despite the loss of his Metal Baboon, Brave Max declares "The fun is still ahead!", sounding very similar to Yuya's Catchphrase.
  • This Cannot Be!: Brave Max is comically distraught after learning the hard way that Extra Deck monsters are not in fact safe from return-to-hand effects.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Aoi's reaction once Emma mentions that Shima is a Blue Angel fanboy.
