• Ambiguously Gay: Bakura's gaydar leads him straight to Ishizu. Make of that what you will.
• Badass Biker: Marik, though the badass part is debatable.
• Because Destiny Says So: Marik gives this as the reason that he must take Yami's greatest power: the power to look good in leather.
• Double Standard: Yugi chastises Marik for taking control of other people to use for dueling, but has no problem with letting Yami take control of his body to do the exact same thing.
  Marik: Oh right, because when I take control of somebody to make them play a card game, that's "pure evil." But when you do it, it's like you're Mother friggin' Teresa!
• Everyone Hates Mimes: Yugi loses all reservations about hurting the person that Marik has brainwashed into attacking him once he finds out that said person is a mime.
• Geeky Turn-On: This will be the first of many moments in the series where Kaiba gets a boner at the mention of an Egyptian god card.
• Shout-Out: The episode opens with dubbed scenes from the Previously on… segment from the Star Trek: The Next Generation two-parter "The Best of Both Worlds".
  • Marik demands that Odion call him "The Skipper", and then tells him that he can be Gilligan.
  • Yami voices his regret of letting Yugi read The Twilight Saga after he is accused of being a vampire even though he's outside during the day.
    Yugi: Well why don't you just suck his blood, Nosferatu?
  • Yugi and Yami reference Wonder Twin Powers during a Transformation Sequence.
    "Form of: an Egyptian homosexual!"
  • Yami describes Marik as "a whiny teenager with magical powers", and then concludes that he must be Harry Potter.
  • Yami shares the power to look good in leather with *NSYNC.
• Take That!: Yami compares dueling Marik to playing the Nintendo Wii. That is, it got boring after about five minutes.
• Waxing Lyrical: After Yami gets trapped inside a cage, he quotes lyrics from The Smashing Pumpkins' "Bullet With Butterfly Wings".
  Yami: Huh! Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage.
