Recap / What We Do In The Shadows S 3 E 10 The Portrait

Go To

With the death of Colin Robinson, everyone must figure out what to do with themselves and where they want to go in life now that their group is one person smaller than it has been in a decade.

  • Actor Allusion: When Guillermo is on his way to talk to Laszlo about his disdain for the United Kingdom, we can hear the latter briefly playing “Take my Hand” on the piano, the theme to Matt Berry’s show Toast of London.
  • Back for the Finale: The Baron, The Sire and the hellhound make a return appearance for the new portrait.
  • Badass Boast: "The only reason you're alive is that I let you live", courtesy of Vampire Hunter Guillermo refusing to allow Nandor to leave him behind.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Laszlo, Nadja, and the Guide are questioning Guillermo being part of the portrait due to his humanity, and it sounds like Nandor immediately steps up to defend him as an important member of the team, until he continues "...even though he is a dog.", revealing he was talking about the Hellhound.
  • Born-Again Immortality: It seems that energy vampires have this, living 100 years before dying and having an infant version of themselves crawling from the husk.
  • Book Ends: Nadja's arc in season 3 starts and ends with promotions to higher ranks in the Vampiric Council.
  • Brick Joke: Viago asks the cameraman if the new Vampiric Council tape is overwriting RuPaul's Drag Race when it starts, and right as the recording ends, it cuts to RuPaul's show.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Nandor doesn't understand the implications of the other vampires questioning Guillermo in the picture, believing that they are talking about the Hellhound.
  • Couch Gag: Played for Drama. All of Colin Robinson's pictures in the opening credits have either been completely removed or torn to censor his face by the vampires.
  • Creator Cameo: Taika Waititi has one final cameo for the season as Viago to grant Nadja her new rank on VCR.
  • Creepy Child: Baby Colin Robinson is quite uncanny.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Nandor's request of Guillermo to join him on a world trip, promise to turn him at a specific time and place, and Guillermo's reactions to said request, play out exactly like a marriage proposal. It's even similar to the one that Nandor tried to make to Gail earlier in the season, which makes it all the more tragic when their plan is foiled.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: When helping Nadja and Lazlo set sail, Guillermo wonders why Lazlo bothered to bring regular food and water with him for the journey, since he can't eat/drink any of it. Turns out it was for Guillermo, as Lazlo locks him into the crate he himself was supposed to get shipped to England in.
  • Historical In-Joke: Nandor remarks that he can't wait to see the beautiful unmarked face of the Sphinx, when in reality, its nose has been famously missing for centuries. Even worse for Nandor, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (historical existence uncertain, but believed to have been destroyed in the first century BCE) and the Colossus of Rhodes (destroyed by an earthquake in 226 BCE) are long gone (and in fact would have been long before Nandor was alive as a human).
  • Internal Reveal: Nandor learns that his hypnotism no longer works on Guillermo, and Guillermo is thus very much capable of killing him.
  • Jump Scare: Baby Colin Robinson suddenly screaming mid-credits as Laszlo is adjusting the group portrait behind him on the mantlepiece.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Nandor and Guillermo get into a brawl, which Guillermo wins by subduing Nandor with a crucifix.
  • Not Quite Dead: When Laszlo goes to the basement to pay his respects to Colin Robinson, he finds that the corpse's torso is torn open with a trail of fluid leading to another room... where he finds a baby with Colin Robinson's face.
  • Stood Up: Laszlo's decision to kidnap Guillermo to aid Nadja while he goes home to help the baby Colin Robinson results in Nandor waiting alone at the train station until it is time to leave, with no knowledge of why Guillermo didn't show.
  • Un-person: The way the vampires mourn the death of their friends and family is by systematically removing them from pictures and getting brand new group portraits made without them. This carries to the credits, where all Colin Robinson pictures are removed or covered up.
  • Walking the Earth: Since he can't become human, and can't go into a Super Slumber if everyone's leaving the house, Nandor opts to go on a cross-country trip to find some new meaning to his life as a vampire.
  • Wham Line: Nandor, after three seasons of dragging heels and making excuses and vague claims, makes an unsolicited promise to turn Guillermo at a specific time and place. Sadly, this plan is foiled thanks to Laszlo.
  • Wham Shot: Laszlo finds a baby with Colin Robinson's head, holding his glasses, in the basement, which is the final shot of the episode before credits and serves as his motivation for letting Nadja go to England alone while he stays in the US.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Nandor makes a promise to Guillermo to take him on a world trip and make him a vampire while there, and has every intention of keeping it... However, Laszlo kidnaps him at the last minute, preventing the trip from happening.
