Recap / Welcome to Night Vale - Ep 8 - The Lights in Radon Canyon

Go To

"Silence is golden. Words are vibrations. Thoughts are magic. Welcome to Night Vale."

Carlos, Night Vale's most significant outsider, investigates the new, weird, flickering lights coming from Radon Canyon and is disturbed at what he finds. Plus, tips for winning the quarterly mandatory lottery, strange billboards appear where they shouldn't be and an update about the vast underground city under the bowling alley.

Tropes present in The Lights In Radon Canyon include:

  • Shout-Out: The Night Vale mandatory lottery, where the winner is fed to hungry wolves, is a clear reference to The Lottery by Shirley Jackson.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: The City Council obviously had nothing to do with the lights in the Radon Canyon, and whatever it was, it was certainly not a very expensive laser-powered seance to summon the ghost of Syd Barrett to perform a concert for them. The City Council are totally not at all big fans of Pink Floyd, so it would be silly to suggest that they would use loads of taxpayer money on such an event.
  • Tele-Frag: One of the strange billboards appeared directly through a live dog. The dog was unhurt.
