    Sideways Stories from Wayside School 
  1. 1 Mrs. Gorf: Mrs. Gorf is an evil teacher who starts turning her students into apples.
  2. 2 Mrs. Jewls: Mrs. Jewls replaces Mrs. Gorf, but when she arrives, she sees the students as monkeys.
  3. 3 Joe: Mrs. Jewls tries to teach Joe the proper way to count.
  4. 4 Sharie: Sharie is always falling asleep in class.
  5. 5 Todd: Todd is always getting into trouble and sent home early on the Kindergarten Bus, but steps up when robbers break into the classroom.
  6. 6 Bebe: Bebe can draw really fast and she and her friend Calvin work together to make art.
  7. 7 Calvin: Mrs. Jewls orders Calvin to deliver a note to Miss Zarves, the teacher on the 19th story, but they don't exist, so he has no idea what to do.
  8. 8 Myron: Myron becomes Class President and is disappointed by how little his responsibilities are.
  9. 9 Maurecia: Maurecia has tried every favor of ice cream and is bored of it, so Mrs. Jewls invents new favors.
  10. 10 Paul: Paul tries to resist the urge to pull Leslie's pigtails.
  11. 11 Dana: Dana has several itchy mosquito bites that prevent her from concentrating in class, so Mrs. Jewls declares she will turn them into numbers.
  12. 12 Jason: Jason gets stuck when Joy puts chewing gum in his seat.
  13. 13 Rondi: Rondi, who is missing her upper front teeth, gets annoyed when people start complimenting her on her teeth and other things she doesn't have.
  14. 14 Sammy: Sammy is a new student who is obnoxious and stinky.
  15. 15 Deedee: Deedee really wants to play with a green or red ball, but every time she goes to the playground, they are all taken and she is stuck with the mediocre yellow ball.
  16. 16 D.J.: D.J. smiles all the time and no one knows why.
  17. 17 John: John can only read upside down words, so he tries to learn how to stand on his head so he can read the blackboard.
  18. 18 Leslie: Leslie thinks her toes are useless and considers selling them.
  19. 19 Miss Zarves: There is no Miss Zarves. There is no 19th story. Sorry.
  20. 20 Kathy: Kathy is a rude girl who hates everybody.
  21. 21 Ron: Ron likes to play kickball even though he is really bad at it.
  22. 22 The Three Erics: The relationship between Eric Fry, Eric Bacon, and Eric Ovens is explored.
  23. 23 Allison: Allison returns favors for each teacher at Wayside School.
  24. 24 Dameon: Mrs. Jewls asks Dameon to ask Louis the yard teacher if he wants to watch a movie with the class.
  25. 25 Jenny: Jenny comes to school late, but finds the building is empty. Then three men in suits with an attache case appear and question her.
  26. 26 Terrence: Terrence is a bully who insults everyone and keeps kicking the balls over the fence.
  27. 27 Joy: Joy steals Dameon's lunch and frames other students for it.
  28. 28 Nancy: Nancy is a boy who is embarrassed by his name, so he decides to trade it with a girl named Mac.
  29. 29 Stephen: Stephen is embarrassed when he is the only one to dress up for the Halloween party.
  30. 30 Louis: During a blizzard, Louis tells the class a story about an ordinary school and students.

    Wayside School is Falling Down 
  1. 1 A Package for Mrs. Jewls: Louis carries a really heavy package to Mrs. Jewls' class.
  2. 2 Mark Miller: Benjamin Nushmutt is a new student, but everybody thinks his name is Mark Miller.
  3. 3 Bebe's Baby Brother: Bebe claims she is being framed for mischief by her little brother Ray.
  4. 4 Homework: Mrs. Jewls dislikes calling on Mac in class because he always talks about irrelevant topics like socks, so she assigns more homework.
  5. 5 Another Story About Socks: Sharie brings in a sock-hating hobo for show-and-tell.
  6. 6 Pigtails: Paul falls out the window and Leslie tries to save him.
  7. 7 Freedom: Myron decides to escape the school and ends up in the basement, where he meets three men in suits with an attache case who give him a choice between safety and freedom.
  8. 8 The Best Part: Todd brings a cute toy dog to class that gets him out of trouble, so Joy tries to steal it.
  9. 9 Mush: Ron orders the lunch lady Miss Mush's dreaded Mushroom Surprise.
  10. 10 Music: Benjamin tries to tell the class his real name during a music lesson.
  11. 11 Kathy and D.J.: D.J. is uncharacteristically upset and Kathy delights in this.
  12. 12 Pencils: Jason tries to break his habit of chewing on pencils.
  13. 13 A Giggle Box, a Leaky Faucet, and a Foghorn: Joe and John tease Dana about how much she laughs and cries during stories.
  14. 14 Calvin's Big Decision: Calvin asks the class to help him decide what tattoo to get.
  15. 15 She's Back!: Deedee and other students freak out when they start seeing Mrs. Gorf briefly.
  16. 16 Love and a Dead Rat: Joy dares Dameon to prove he isn't in love with Mrs. Jewls.
  17. 17 What?: A chapter that is read backwards, it concerns Jenny being late for school and only hearing the end of a story.
  18. 18 The Substitute: Benjamin tells his real name to a substitute teacher named Mrs. Franklin, but the other students think it is a prank and all start introducing themselves as Benjamin too.
  19. 19 A Bad Case of the Sillies: When Allison is knocked down by Ron and Deedee's horseplay, she comes to class and is shocked to find no one can see or hear her. A woman introduces herself as Miss Zarves and takes her to her class on the 19th story.
  20. 19 A Wonderful Teacher: The students on the 19th story are never allowed to leave and have to do inane work like alphabetizing the numbers from zero to one million. After doing this for a while, Allison starts to forget where she came from.
  21. 19 Forever is Never: After about six days, Allison remembers where she came from and comes up with a plan to escape the 19th story.
  22. 20, 21, & 22 Eric, Eric, and Eric: The principal, Mr. Kidswatter, confronts the three Erics and demands to know which of them wrote an insulting note about him.
  23. 23 Teeth: Rondi's front teeth finally grow in, but she worries that she won't be seen as cute anymore.
  24. 24 Another Story About Potatoes: Joe forgets his lunch, so he has to try Miss Mush's potato salad.
  25. 25 A Story That Isn't About Socks: Stephen wears an uncomfortable suit for picture day.
  26. 26 The Mean Mrs. Jewls: Mrs. Jewls develops an evil personality.
  27. 27 Lost and Found: Maurecia finds a bag of money and tries to find its rightful owner.
  28. 28 Valoosh: The class goes to a dance class with an eccentric teacher.
  29. 29 The Lost Ear: Mac tells a wild story about a man who lost his ear, while Benjamin finally tells the class his real name.
  30. 30 Wayside School is Falling Down: Wayside School is evacuated and closed down because of a huge storm and then a cow invasion.

    Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger 
  1. 1 Explanation: Two-hundred and forty-three days after Wayside School was closed down, Louis finally manages to clean it up and get rid of the cows, so it is reopened. The students, who were sent to different schools, are happy to be back.
  2. 2 A Message from the Principal: Mr. Kidswatter makes an announcement welcoming everyone back, but forgets to turn the intercom off and everyone hears him rant about how much he hates children and coming to this school.
  3. 3 Poetry: Mrs. Jewls tells the class to write poems based on colors.
  4. 4 Dr. Pickle: Dr. Pickell is a psychiatrist who specializes in hypnosis to cure patients, but tends to also use it to prank people. After getting caught and fired, he is hired as Wayside School's counselor.
  5. 5 A Story with a Disappointing Ending: Paul is sent to Dr. Pickell to cure his addiction to pulling Leslie's pigtails.
  6. 6 Pet Day: Mrs. Jewls has everyone in her class bring in their pets, but their names lead to her getting confused.
  7. 7 A Bad Word: After Mr. Kidswatter bumps into a door, he angrily declares that from now on, "door" is a bad word and people should refer to a door as a "goozack".
  8. 8 Santa Claus: Kathy declares she doesn't believe in Santa Claus, so the class tries to prove he is real.
  9. 9 Something Different about Mrs. Jewls: Mrs. Jewls reveals she is pregnant so she'll have to leave for a while. After everyone says goodbye, she tells them their new teacher is Mr. Gorf.
  10. 10 Mr. Gorf: The class becomes scared, thinking Mr. Gorf will be as horrible as Mrs. Gorf.
  11. 11 Voices: Mr. Gorf steals the students' voices and reveals he is Mrs. Gorf's son and seeks revenge.
  12. 12 Nose: Mr. Gorf imitates the students' voices to call their mothers and insult them, but Miss Mush figures out what is going on and defeats him, forcing the voices back to their rightful owners.
  13. 13 The New Teacher: A new teacher named Mrs. Drazil introduces herself, but Deedee is suspicious of her.
  14. 14 A Light Bulb, a Pencil Sharpener, a Coffeepot, and a Sack of Potatoes: Mrs. Drazil has the class drop several items out the window to prove Galileo's theory that objects fall at the same rate regardless of weight.
  15. 15 An Elephant in Wayside School: Deedee takes Louis to meet Mrs. Drazil. Unfortunately, it turns out he used to be one of her students and she still has a grudge against him.
  16. 16 Mr. Poop: Out of fear of Mrs. Drazil, Louis shaves his mustache and becomes a strict, boring man who won't let the kids have any fun.
  17. 17 Why the Children Decided They Had to Get Rid of Mrs. Drazil: All of Mrs. Drazil's best characteristics are noted, but the students agree she still has to go because she made Louis shave his mustache.
  18. 18 The Blue Notebook: Sharie distracts Mrs. Drazil so the rest of the class can steal her notebook.
  19. 19 Time Out: Miss Zarves is tired of teaching for so long with no recognition and decides to leave, but three men in suits with an attache case tell her that she is still needed.
  20. 20 Elevators: Mr. Kidswatter installs elevators in Wayside School, but doesn't think their construction through.
  21. 21 Open Wide: Jason has a dental appointment. Eventually, he realizes his dentist is Jane Smith, a former student listed in Mrs. Drazil's notebook whom she hates even more than Louis.
  22. 22 Jane Smith: The students let Mrs. Drazil know where Jane lives. After school, she breaks into Jane's home and chases her into the wilderness, where they are never heard from again.
  23. 23 Ears: Wendy Nogard has a third ear inside her hair and the ability to read minds. After getting dumped by her boyfriend, she dedicates her life to making others miserable and becomes a teacher at Wayside School.
  24. 24 Glum and Blah: Wendy reads the students' minds to discover their secrets so she can make them miserable.
  25. 25 Guilty: Wendy reads Maurecia's mind to learn she had accidentally torn a page out of the dictionary and reveals this to the class. Maurecia suspects one of her friends ratted her out.
  26. 26 Never Laugh at a Shoelace: Mac forgot to bring something for show-and-tell, so he pulls out his shoelace and makes up a wild story about it.
  27. 27 Way-High-Up Ball: Louis, who had gone back to normal after Mrs. Drazil left, joins the three Erics' invented ball game. Along the way, he catches a glimpse of Wendy and becomes attracted to her.
  28. 28 Flowers for a Very Special Person: Louis tries to work up the courage to give Wendy flowers.
  29. 29 Stupid: Wendy uses her mind reading to intentionally only call on students with the wrong answers. Soon, everybody is mad at each other for being stupid.
  30. 30 The Little Stranger: Mrs. Jewls returns and presents her newborn daughter, Mavis. Mavis soon melts everybody's hearts, including Wendy's.

    Wayside School Beneath the Cloud of Doom 
  1. 1 The Bells of Wayside: As Wayside School's bell system is explained, Todd struggles to make it to class on time.
  2. 2 A Million: Mrs. Jewls looks for ideas of what to collect a million of.
  3. 3 Up and Down: Kathy takes D.J. to see Dr. Pickell for his hiccups.
  4. 4 Consider the Paper Clip: Mrs. Jewls tells her students that paper clips are very important and to never lose or damage them.
  5. 5 Eric, Eric, and What's-His-Name?: Eric Ovens wants more recognition by trying to bring in more nail clippings for Mrs. Jewls' million collection than anyone.
  6. 6 Oppositosis: It is revealed Dr. Pickell hypnotized Kathy to be friendly.
  7. 7 The Closet That Wasn't There: Mac finds a heavily locked closet in the room, but Mrs. Jewls refuses to let anyone look inside.
  8. 8 Science: The class goes to the roof to watch clouds, but when they spot a really dark, unusual-looking cloud, Mrs. Jewls ushers them inside and explains it is a Cloud of Doom.
  9. 9 The Gonnnnng: While Louis helps Mr. Kidswatter ring the gong that signals the end of class, Kidswatter asks him how to be more popular with the kids.
  10. 10 Stuck: Dana makes a funny face and it becomes stuck like that.
  11. 11 What's the Point?: The presence of the Cloud of Doom makes everyone pessimistic.
  12. 12 Mrs. Surlaw: The class visits the library and meets the librarian, Mrs. Surlaw. Allison and Jason compete to check out the longest book.
  13. 13 Umbrella: Sharie plays with her umbrella outside, but a gust of wind carries her into the air.
  14. 14 Mr. K and Dr. P: Mr. Kidswatter asks Dr. Pickell to help him because his face is stuck.
  15. 15 The Unbreakables: Maurecia, Joy, Deedee, and Ron have formed a team called the Unbreakables, where they claim nothing can break their friendship, not even the Cloud of Doom. They help Deedee when she accidentally throws her homework in the trash and it goes to a dumpster.
  16. 16 A Short Chapter About a Long Book: Jason struggles to finish the really long book he checked out.
  17. 17 The Best Principal Ever!!!: In a bid to become popular, Mr. Kidswatter tells Stephen he will let him ring the gong that signals the end of class on Friday.
  18. 18 The Mirror: Dr. Pickell tries to cure his own stuck face. He succeeds, but in the process undoes the hypnosis he did on Kathy.
  19. 19 Push-Downs: Kathy remains nice because she enjoyed it, while Stephen tries to exercise to strengthen himself because the hammer to ring the gong is really heavy.
  20. 20 Inside the Closet: Jason finally finishes the book and writes a book report, but he accidentally damages his paper clip. An angry Mrs. Jewls decides to show him the inside of the closet.
  21. 21 Breathe: Stephen is really nervous about ringing the gong so his classmates try to help him relax.
  22. 22 The Moment: It is finally time for Stephen to ring the gong.
  23. 23 Blame It on the Cloud: The students start misbehaving and blaming their actions on the Cloud of Doom.
  24. 24 The Ultimate Test, Day One: Mrs. Jewls holds the Ultimate Test, which will last three days. For day one, it is a spelling bee. As the class competes, everyone's friendships are tested, even the Unbreakables.
  25. 25 Jump Rope Arithmetic: For day two of the Ultimate Test, the class has to answer math problems while jumping rope.
  26. 26 The Ultimate, Ultimate Test: For the final day of the Ultimate Test, the class has to race up the stairs while answering trivia questions.
  27. 27 Kachooga Boop: Just as the class collects 999,999 nail clippings, they hear a strange bell that tells them to evacuate because the Cloud of Doom is about to destroy everything.
  28. 28 The Teacher With the Long Fingernail: While trying to evacuate, the class ends up trapped on the 19th story with Miss Zarves' class. They eventually escape and add Miss Zarves' fingernail to their collection, bringing it up to one million.
  29. 29 After The Storm: After a mighty snow storm, the Cloud of Doom dissipates. Louis cleans up the school while the kids enjoy an extra long recess.
  30. 30 Rainbow: Miss Mush and her assistant Mr. Pepperadder improvise rainbow stew for lunch.

Sideways Arithmetic series

    Sideways Arithmetic from Wayside School 
  1. 1 Spelling: Sue is a new student who gets completely confused when Mrs. Jewls has the class do math with words instead of numbers.
  2. 2 Numbers: Sue tries and fails to get the class to do math with regular numbers.
  3. 3 Pronouns: Mrs. Jewls tries to teach Sue how to do math with pronouns, but warns her she'll have to go back to her old school if she can't get it right.
  4. 4 Paragraphs: The reader is challenged to solve multiplication problems with words.
  5. 5 Recess: The students debate between playing freeze tag and basketball during recess using math.
  6. 6 Science, Geography, Etc.: Mrs. Jewls struggles with grading a series of tests from earlier in the year.
  7. 7 Lunch: The reader is challenged to find the optimum amount of food Miss Mush and Mr. Pepperadder can cook while still tasting good.
  8. 8 True or False: Mrs. Jewls gives a test with true or false answers, but due to Joy's arrogance, gives her an unsolvable one and won't let her go home until she finishes.
  9. 9 After School: Joy and Sue are stuck in class working on their tests while everyone has gone home. When Joy notices Mrs. Jewls has gone home too, she and Sue go home and become friends.

  1. 1 Why Boys and Girls Are Silly: Jason and Stephen are upset that Allison is only inviting two boys to her birthday party.
  2. 2 Some Crass Words About Women's Underwear: The class is surprised when Mrs. Jewls writes word math problems with risqué words like "bra".
  3. 3 Sue's New Dog: Sue gets a new pet dog named Fangs, but Calvin worries he'll be mean.
  4. 4 Four Times Too: Everyone struggles with a heat wave, but Mrs. Jewls sees an arithmetic opportunity.
  5. 5 Miss Worm: Miss Worm, the teacher on the 29th story, decides to sit in on Mrs. Jewls' class and gets confused by their word math.
  6. 6 Miss Worm Finally Understands!: Miss Worm gets frustrated by the class' word math, but her exclamations end up being the answers.
  7. 7 The Quiz That Wouldn't Pop: Mrs. Jewls announces there will be a surprise pop quiz. The students try to get out of it.
  8. 8 Oh, No!: The class is afraid to do multiplication problems.
  9. 9 Foreign Language Lesson: Mrs. Jewls teaches her class how to say "yes" in different languages.
  10. 10 He, She, We, and Ewe: A few difficult multiplication problems are given to the reader to solve.
  11. 11 Report Cards: When Mrs. Jewls' new computer fails, she has to grade report cards the old fashioned way.
  12. 12 The New Flagpole: After Wayside School's flagpole is struck by lightning and destroyed, the class gets to decide how tall the new one will be.
  13. 13 Strange Facts: The reader is challenged to see which facts about the class are true or false.
  14. 14 Game Day: The students compete in an event called the Wayside Olympics.
  15. 15 Conclusion: The reader is challenged to draw a conclusion based on events from the Wayside Olympics.
