Recap / Voltron: Legendary Defender S8E13

"For some of us, she was a diplomat, a teacher, a leader, and a friend. But to those of us around this table, she will always be family."
Coran

The heroes engage Honerva in battle on the alternate Altea and attempt to follow her through the rift when she escapes into the source of all realities. Honerva destroys all remaining realities except for one; the team stops her from ending all existence by summoning a powerful weapon that manages to drive her into the collective consciousness of all existence. They plead with Honerva to stop her crusade, and Allura finally gets through to her by reminding her of her time as an Altean scientist helping to uplift people. Allura says that she can manipulate the Quintessence in Honerva's vessel to restore the lost realities, but everyone realizes she has to sacrifice herself to do so. She says her goodbyes to the other paladins before she leaves with Honerva. Keith and the others awaken in their lions and realize that they're back in their reality, except Allura is gone and Altea and Daibazaal have been restored.

One year later, Keith, Krolia, and Kolivan announce that the former Galra Empire is joining the new Galactic Coalition. Hunk and his cooking crew (comprising of Shay and Romelle among others) caters a political dinner attended by Shiro and other leaders. Pidge and Matt put the finishing touches on a robot named Chip before Pidge blasts off in the Green Lion.

On Altea, Coran and Merla prepare for the first Celebration of Allura as Lance — now helping on his family's farm — tells Allura's story to a group of children. Pidge, Hunk, Shiro, Lance, Keith, and Coran catch up at Allura's statue. Later that night, the lions bid goodbye to the paladins before blasting off into space.

A series of photographs then tell snippets of the paladins' lives after the ending.

Tropes:

  • And the Adventure Continues: The post credit scene shows the Lions flying off into a star nebula shaped like Allura.
  • Apocalypse How: Upgraded to Class Z from last episode due to Honerva traveling to the source of all realities, where she can end universes as easily as firing any of her weapons.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Voltron Paladins finally save the universe ... at the cost of Allura's life.
  • Book Ends: The Blue Lion was the first lion the Paladins found, and the last to leave them.
  • Call to Agriculture: Lance ends up leaving the military and settles down on his family's farm.
  • Came Back Strong: The universe itself. The planets Altea and Daibazaal that were formerly destroyed have been completely restored with the implications that some of the other acts of destruction caused over the last 10,000 years by the Galra empire may have also been undone.
  • Effective Knockoff: The epilogue shows that the Holt family has recreated Voltron-style technology, seemingly without access to a trans-dimensional comet.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change:
    • Matt has shorter hair one year later.
    • In the photograph showing the timeskip, Keith's hair is now in a ponytail.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Allura helps Honerva restore the realities she destroyed. However, this means that her team has to return to their reality without her.
  • Humans Are Special: The paladins are of the opinion that while humanity does have its flaws, people are able to understand and spread good messages anyway.
  • The Magic Goes Away: A variant; with the universe finally saved, the Lions leave their Paladins forever.
  • Mythology Gag: Pidge is building a robot named Chip, who looks exactly like 80s Pidge's brother of the same name from the Vehicle Voltron series. Part of the epilogue also shows the Holt family building Vehicle Voltron itself.
  • Offered the Crown: Keith is given the opportunity to climb the Kral Zera unopposed. He chooses not to, and instead devotes his life to turning the Blades of Marmora into a humanitarian aid organization and the Empire itself into a less totalitarian system.
  • Second Love: Shiro is shown in his epilogue to have settled down with his new husband, Curtis, the Atlas's comms officer.
  • Suicidal Cosmic Temper Tantrum: Honerva decides that if she can't find a reality where she can be happy with her family, then she'll unmake all realities.
  • Time Skip: After returning to their own reality and finding a restored planet Altea, the story cuts to One Year Later; after a memorial dinner with Team Voltron, the Lions fly off to parts unknown, and there's another time skip, though this time not specified how long, leading into the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue.
  • Together in Death: As Honerva and Allura walk into the light, they are greeted by the five original paladins and Lotor.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: The last few seconds of the episode show what the Paladins ended up doing after the Lions leave:
    • The Holt family established the next generation of Legendary Defenders. note
    • Hunk created a culinary empire, bringing the universe together, one meal at a time.note
    • Lance continued to spread Allura's message while surrounding himself with the things he loved, having retired from the military to spend his time on his family's farm..
    • Kolivan and Krolia became the Galra representatives to the Galactic Coalition.
    • Keith helped transition The Blade of Marmora to a humanitarian relief organization. note
    • Shiro found his happiness and finally left the battle behind. note
