Go To

Charlie likes his sweet new girlfriend, Wendy, but he becomes concerned when Jake forms a strong friendship with her. When Wendy charms Evelyn as well, Charlie worries that Wendy is expecting more from the relationship than he is.

Tropes:

  • Brutal Honesty: Unable to get Jake to leave, Charlie tells Jake upfront that he has a woman with him in the shower.
  • Commitment Issues: This is the reason why Charlie breaks up with Wendy
  • From Bad to Worse: As Jake avoids his uncle Charlie because he is mad at him for breaking up with Wendy, Charlie tries to clear it up with him but only makes things worse. "It's not that I don't care what you want. It's just that you're a kid and what you want doesn't matter".
  • Death Glare: Jake delivers one to his uncle Charlie after a simple talk to him only makes him even madder.
  • Disappointed in You: Jake says this word for word to his uncle Charlie as he unpacks his belongings in his room.
  • Girl of the Week: Wendy to Charlie.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: Charlie and Wendy are having a moment in his shower when Jake bursts in with the news that he heard his "Fudge Nuggets" song on TV. They're hidden by the shower curtain but still, it's unsettling for Jake so he leaves.
  • It Doesn't Mean Anything: While shopping, Charlie finds out that Wendy has broken up with him, and she was just being polite with everyone at the Harper residence.
  • It Meant Something to Me: Charlie is crushed when Wendy broke up with him and was just being polite to his family when she didn't actually like them. Jake is disappointed that Charlie let Wendy break up with him but they compromise.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Charlie sees Alan and Rose playing Scrabble together and thinks they're a couple. Alan and Rose both share their disgust at the assumption.
  • Not Staying for Breakfast: Charlie does a happy dance thinking that Wendy left after spending the night with him. Unfortunately Wendy's still at his beach house and she's having coffee and small talk with his mother.
  • Properly Paranoid: Charlie believes that a woman he is seeing is out to get him. Turns out he was right on the money but it wasn't Wendy this time. It was Rose.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Charlie believes that a woman he dated is using Jake and Alan go get close to him. He's right but for the wrong person.
  • Shower of Love: Charlie and Wendy share one in the episode's opening, leading to Jake accidentally walking in on them.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Charlie and Wendy share one big kiss before she has to leave and it's enough to make them head to the bedroom.
  • The Missus and the Ex: Charlie has an awkward run-in with Wendy and her new boyfriend Dave.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: After their trysts, Charlie tries to get his latest fling Wendy to leave, but many things prevent her from leaving.
  • Title Drop: Via Rose, when it's revealed she was spending time with Alan to get to Charlie.
  • Unrequited Love Switcheroo: Wendy is interested in Charlie but he doesn't see a future with Wendy and tries many times to get rid of her. Once he runs into her shopping with her new boyfriend, Wendy let's Charlie know how she really feels and she then she breaks things off with him. Ironically, after all of his assumptions, Charlie is devastated over the breakup.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Jake thinks this when he has grown close to Wendy and is disappointed to learn that his uncle Charlie has deliberately let Wendy go.
  • Wham Line: After Charlie apologizes to Rose for thinking she was spending time with Alan to get to him, he leaves to go join their board game playing and Rose drops the wham line when she is alone. "Phase one, complete".
