Go To

Charlie does not know how to discipline Jake for luring a flock of seagulls into his room, and Judith surprises Alan when he goes home to fix her sprinklers. Original air date, September 29, 2003.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: To open this episode, Charlie sits at the piano with Jake and plays the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme. In real life, producer Chuck Lorre composed that theme.
  • Before My Time: Jake says this word for word as he's never heard of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before.
  • Black Comedy: After finding a nest of seagull eggs in his drawer, Alan asks if he knows what this means. Charlie responds "Yeah. Breakfast.", earning him a dope slap from Alan.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Charlie buys Jake an Xbox and some videogames but as punishment for letting the seagulls into his house, he can't play with the items for a month.
  • Feathered Fiend: Type 4. Charlie sees seagulls as this to him and his home.
  • I Just Want My Beloved to Be Happy: At first, Alan tells Judith that she's free to be happy with whomever or whatever she wants, only to be met with a kiss. Later, they agree they're both scared of moving on and they know what's right.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When he sees Jake going to his room with a loaf of bread, Charlie asks him if he's not feeding the seagulls again. Then a loud seagull squawking noise comes from Jake's bedroom.
Charlie: Please tell me you're not feeding the seagulls again.
(Seagull squawking noise coming from Jake's room)
    Jake: ...Okay.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Charlie frequently tells Jake not to leaves his juice boxes on his piano because they leave a residue "ring". Jake asks "how could a box leave a ring?".
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Alan is correct when he points out the issues with how Charlie is interacting with Jake, both in how his unwillingness to help Alan enforce punishments is just going to make Jake misbehave more, and that the proper way to punish a misbehaving child is to take away privileges and toys rather than your love towards the child. But it's not particularly reasonable for them to expect Charlie to immediately get over and forgive Jake for doing something that he very explicitly told him not to do, which ends up rendering an entire room in Charlie's house unusable, while he's still trying to fix the problem.
  • Papa Wolf: Alan becomes this when Charlie won't accept Jake's apologies.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Jake is unfamiliar with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tv show or franchise as he has never heard of it. His uncle Charlie makes fun of him for it.
  • Product Placement: There is some Hello Kitty toys, Nintendo Gamecube systems, Harry Potter and Halo videogames in the background of the store where Charlie buys Jake an Xbox and his videogames.
  • Rejected Apology: Jake apologizes to his uncle Charlie for letting the seagulls in the house. Only to be rejected over and over. Alan calls him that it on it.
  • Shout-Out:
    • On the piano, Charlie plays the theme song from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) series.
    • Charlie buys Jake an Xbox console and some videogames. One of them is Halo.
    • While trying to contact animal control to get rid of the seagulls, Charlie accidentally references the 1980's one-hit wonder group A Flock Of Seagulls.
  • "Shut Up" Kiss: After being told that they're both afraid of moving on from one another and that she is now free to move on, Judith plants a big one on Alan.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Alan and Judith share quite a kiss all while being splashed by a malfunctioning sprinkler.
  • World's Smallest Violin: Charlie mentions the world's smallest violin when Jake starts complaining about being punished for a month.
