Recap / Tuca And Bertie S 2 E 09 The Dance

Go To

Bertie invites Tuca and Kara to attend the annual Bird Carnival with her and Speckle, but Tuca's reinvented herself into someone entirely new.

Tropes:

  • Anxiety Dreams: Bertie has a nightmare / vision of her stuck inside Tuca's "Bertie is keeping me alone" cup and rolling over Kara, symbolizing her fear that getting involved in Tuca and Kara's relationship will mess them up.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Bertie almost snaps Tuca out of her personality change by asking her, "Is [Kara] changing for you? Or is it all one-sided?"
  • Balloon Belly: Speckle grows rather bloated after eating a mountain of hot dogs all by himself.
  • Call-Back: The carnival is being run courtesy of the moss, the same one that took over the apartment building.
  • Changing Yourself for Love: Due to Kara's condescension and Bertie telling her earlier that relationships require "compromise and change", Tuca becomes convinced that her personality is "too much for people," and transforms herself into somebody professional and well-dressed so that Kara will stay with her.
  • Disney Acid Sequence: Tuca has an abstract minimalist vision of her, Kara, and Bertie dancing that represents how Kara makes her feel small while Bertie makes her feel alive.
  • Gilligan Cut: Bertie tells Speckle that she thinks everything will be okay with Tuca spending time with Kara. Smash Cut to Bertie crying to her therapist, "Nothing's okay!"
  • Hidden Depths: Bruce gives Tuca great, albeit innuendo-laced advice.
  • Holding the Floor: Speckle distracts Kara by asking her about health hazards at the carnival so Bertie can get Tuca alone.
  • Joke of the Butt:
    • Tuca's dance during the Disney Acid Sequence includes blowing up her buttocks to large proportions.
    • Bertie makes Tuca a "butt cake" after "butting" into her and Kara's relationship. Tuca remarks that it better have chocolate filling. Bertie says it does.
  • Magic 8-Ball: Bertie's therapist consults a "magic therapy ball" to figure out what to do about Bertie's problem. It says, "Let's unpack that." When Bertie's apathetic to invite Tuca to the Bird Town carnival, the therapist shakes it again and it gives an oddly specific answer.
"Nobody hates you, you just need to drink more water, get eight hours of sleep, and invite your best friend to the carnival."
  • Neat Freak: Kara's most prominent complaint about the fair is how dirty it is, everything covered in germs.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Tuca becomes much more toned down after hanging with Kara, wearing business casual clothing (including long pants), speaking softly and professionally, and replying to texts in a very formal way. Bertie immediately and correctly senses that something is very, very wrong.
  • Passive-Aggressive Kombat: While not a fight, Kara makes passive-aggressive comments about Tuca to make her feel bad about herself and change her behavior. Speckle and Bertie see this and try to warn Tuca of the manipulation.
  • Potty Emergency: In the stinger Speckle is shown rushing into the bathroom and then crawling out moments later, groaning all the while. The Brick Joke is that the bathroom is soundproof, so nothing is heard while he's inside.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: In-Universe, Speckle refers to his and Bertie's hypothetical baby as either "Berkle" or "Spertie."
  • Squashed Flat: In Bertie's nightmare, she rolls down a hill inside Tuca's cup and flattens Kara while Kara's on a date with Tuca.
  • Win Her a Prize: A platonic variant. Tuca and Bertie have a tradition where Bertie plays a carnival game and gives Tuca the prize.
