Recap / Transformers: Animated, S2E13: A Bridge Too Close — Part II

Go To

The fates of Cybertron and Earth lie in the balance as Optimus Prime and his Autobots battle Megatron and his Decepticons in a fight to the finish for the AllSpark.

Tropes:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When Thundercracker gets stuck in Mixmaster's concrete mixture:
Thundercracker: You are not worthy, you are inferior, and your joke stinks!
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Ratchet, Sari and Omega Supreme arrive in time to distract the Starscream clones, Blitzwing and Lugnut.
    • Using Processor over Matter, Prowl breaks free last-minute to save Optimus from being thrown through the portal by Megatron.
  • Big "NO!":
    • Megatron while getting sucked through the portal.
    • Ratchet when Omega Supreme says he will sacrifice himself to protect the others.
  • Bittersweet Ending: For Sari, she gets her father back, but discovers something off with her elbow after their escape.
  • Cliffhanger: After the Wham Shot, Sari backs away from her father. Sumdac only has one sober thing to say:
  • Collapsing Lair: The cave in which Megatron is hiding out collapses after Omega Supreme enters through the Space Bridge.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: When Bulkhead tries to tackle Slipstream, she easily subdues him in a pair of stasis cuffs.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Omega Supreme protects the other Autobots by absorbing the transwarp energy and getting sucked through the space bridge. Bulkhead suggests he may've still survived, which is confirmed at the start of Season 3.
Omega Supreme: I am programmed to protect, and sacrifice, if necessary.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Sumdac asks him why he got Megatron's space bridge working when he should've sabotaged the thing instead, Bulkhead retorts "This from the man who rebuilt Megatron!".
  • I'll Kill You!: Megatron doesn't take the last-minute failure of a plan he spent all season working on very well.
Megatron: [to Optimus] You have jammed up my gears for the last time, Autobot! [takes aim]
  • Internal Reveal: The Autobots learn that Longarm is really Shockwave and that Wasp wasn't a traitor.
  • Mood Whiplash: After Megatron explains his plan and tells them to prepare for the conquest of Cybertron, the other Decepticons begin cheering. The Constructicons then suddenly stop.
    Scrapper: Uh, what's a Cybertron?
Mixmaster: I have no idea. He lost me at "Your fate is sealed now."
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Bumblebee learns Wasp wasn't a spy, Bulkhead's next line carries a tone that exudes this trope:
Bulkhead: (soberly) You sent an innocent bot to the stocks...
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: If Sumdac had just ''let'' Starscream kill Megatron instead of zapping the former with the Headmaster unit, the Autobots could've been spared a lot of pain.
  • Previously on…: The episode begins with a short recap of last episode's events. Optimus Prime ends up delivering the "Previously on..." line.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: When Starscream and his clone army arrives at Megatron's mine headquarters and attacks him for his Space Bridge, Optimus Prime wants to help fight against them. Bumblebee asks why don't they let Starscream and his clones take down Megatron, Optimus points out they can't afford to have any Decepticons go through the Space Bridge to get to Cybertron.
  • Skewed Priorities: When Megatron's lair is collapsing, Mixmaster and Scrapper stay in the lair to try and save the oil.
  • The Stinger: Notably, the only episode to have a scene playing over the end credits. Stranded out in space, Megatron and Starscream argue with each other. This was reportedly improvised by the actors.
  • Wham Episode: The episode brings some heavy changes to the status quo, that's for sure.
    • The Autobots' ship is alive, and it's a fellow Cybertronian named Omega Supreme.
    • Megatron is off Earth and stranded out in space.
    • Sari is apparently a robot.
  • Wham Line: "I am... OMEGA SUPREME!"
  • Wham Shot: Sari taking her hand off of her elbow to reveal a sparking, cybernetic joint underneath her skin.
  • Zerg Rush: Starscream attacks Megatron with an army of clones. Despite curb-stomping Starscream in previous battles, Megatron gets completely overwhelmed due to their sheer numbers. Had it not been for Professor Sumdac's attempted Deus ex Machina, Starscream would have killed Megatron.
