Recap / Tiny Toon Adventures S 1 E 20 You Asked For It

Go To

The twentieth episode of Tiny Toon Adventures, but the fourth in production order.

Buster and Babs describe the episode as a "viewer request" day. Plucky invents the ACME Brain Wave Scan-O-Meter machine to pick who will star in each segment, but becomes frustrated when it fails to pick him.

Short One: "Debutante Devil"

Taz gives Dizzy instructions to eat Babs. She then corrects Dizzy's behavior by giving him a finishing school-style routine.

Short Two: "Sleight of Hare"

Buster works as a magician's rabbit at Montana Max's birthday party, then gets revenge after the magician quits due to Monty's constant interruptions.

Short Three: "Duck Out of Luck"

Plucky successfully rigs the mind-reading machine to select him as the star of the last cartoon, but Buster and Babs say that the viewers decide what happens to Plucky within the short. Plucky goes through several transformations and settings.

This episode provides examples of:

Overall:

  • …But He Sounds Handsome: The Tiny Toons fan who compliments Babs and asks specifically for cartoons about her… looks like Babs.
  • The Cameo: In the first wraparound, Lightning Rodriguez, Speedy Gonzales' scrapped Tiny Toons counterpart can be seen among the list of choices, as well as scrapped Foghorn Leghorn and Gremlin counterparts (the former of which looks nothing like Fowlmouth, who would not be introduced for some time.)
  • Credits Gag: Guy who says "Narf" - Eddie Fitzgerald.
  • Didn't Think This Through: In the second wraparound, Plucky tries to get himself to be chosen for the second short by removing Babs from the Acme Brain Wave Scan-O-Meter's list of choices. Unfortunately, he didn't count on Buster being chosen for the second short. In the third wraparound, he removes every other choice from the Acme Brain Wave Scan-O-Meter, so by default, he'll have to be chosen.
  • Fake Interactivity: Plucky invents the Acme Brain Wave Scan-O-Meter to read the viewers' minds and determine who will star in the upcoming cartoons. "Duck Out of Luck" takes this another level by giving the viewers control over Plucky's fate.
  • Thick-Line Animation: As is typical of an early Wang Film Productions episode at this point in the series; Debutante Devil exhibiting this the most out of all three shorts.
  • Three Shorts

Debutante Devil:

  • Book on the Head: Babs makes Dizzy do this. She then puts a bunch of heavy objects on top of it, including more books, a refrigerator, a safe, a car, a steamroller, a tugboat, a space shuttle, several boxes, and the White House. It all crashes down on Dizzy when she adds a piece of tissue paper.
  • Disney Villain Death: Dizzy falls off a cliff and through ACME Looniversity after Babs tricks him into saying a tongue twister with a mouth full of rocks.
  • Impact Silhouette: Dizzy leaves one when he falls through ACME Looniversity.
  • The Last Straw: When Babs stacks a pile of heavy objects on top of Dizzy, who just barely manages to hold it all up, she adds, "I just can't help myself!" as she delicately places a piece of tissue paper on top of the pile. The pile crashes down on Dizzy.
  • Pygmalion Plot: Played with, as Babs' attempts to improve Dizzy's manners are just a ploy to keep him from eating her.
  • Tongue Twister: The Valley Girl inflected "The walls on the mall are totally, totally tall." Babs makes Dizzy say it with marbles in his mouth to improve his elocution.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Babs' lunch consists of carrot juice, a carrot salad, carrot chips, and a carrot cake.
Babs: Picking up on a theme here?
  • The Unreveal: Dizzy Devil's license is revealed to say, "Age: Unripe, Hair: Lots, Eyes: Two, Height: Tiny".
  • Wrong Turn at Albuquerque: Taking a cue from her inspiration, Babs ends up in Tasmania due to taking a wrong turn at Piscataway.

Sleight of Hare:

  • Birthday Episode: This short takes place during Montana Max's birthday.
  • Bookends: This short begins and ends with "Happy Birthday to You!" being sung to Monty.
  • Dynamite Candle: At the end of the short, Buster bakes a cake for Monty, with a stick of dynamite as the top candle, which explodes when Monty tries to blow out the candles.
  • Escape Artist: Monty traps Buster in a box, chains it together, and drops it in a shark tank. Cue Buster standing completely unharmed next to Monty, and Monty somehow ending up in the box.
  • Happy Birthday to You!: This song is sung to Monty at the beginning and the end of the short.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Monty spends a fortune on Rent-A-Friend, bringing them in by the busload for his birthday. However, Max's abusive nature means he goes through them fast. One such example has him ejecting one of the rent-a-friends for giving him the exact same present (a water gun) as the previous one.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg:
Grovely: Young ladies, gentlemen, uh... and you too, Master Monty, Presto the Great!
  • Pie in the Face: Monty tosses pies at Presto and Buster, causing the former to quit and the latter to take the former's place.
  • Pull a Rabbit out of My Hat: Buster gets a job as Presto the Great's rabbit in this short.
    Presto: Nothing in my hat,
Monty: And nothing in your head!
  • Rabbit Magician: Buster gets a job as a rabbit for a magician who performs at Montana Max's birthday party. When Monty causes the magician to quit, Buster takes over for the magician and performs a magic act on Monty as revenge.
  • Saw a Woman in Half: Buster does this to Monty with a chainsaw. Cue Monty's upper body detaching from his lower body.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Monty causes Presto to quit and become a dentist, and Buster to take his place.
  • This Means War!: Buster decides to get back at Monty by taking Presto's place when Monty causes Presto to quit.
  • White Gloves: As Buster leads the Rent-A-Friends to sing "Happy Birthday" to Monty, he takes his hands out of his gloves, so they can continue leading the Rent-A-Friends while he leaves to bake a cake, with a stick of dynamite as the top candle.
  • With Friends Like These...: After Monty's rent-a-friends neglect to remember his name while singing Happy Birthday to You, Monty tells them "With rent-a-friends like you, who needs rent-an-enemies?"

Duck Out of Luck:

  • Abnormal Ammo: When the scene where airplanes fire at Plucky as Duck Kong is played in slow-motion, some of the ammunition that fires from an airplane's cannons include a yellow kitchen sink, a green elf (somewhat resembling a green Smurf), a television set, a purple trash can, a green boot, George Jetson from The Jetsons, a soda can, a toilet, Superman's S logo, Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, and a golden boxing glove.
  • Anything but That!: Plucky's reaction at the end when the viewers start turning him into Buster and Babs.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Upon Plucky's request to be the biggest star on the show, he grows to Kaiju proportions and becomes "Duck Kong".
  • Butt-Monkey: Plucky.
  • Disney Villain Death: Plucky suffers this when he accidentally walks off the Empire State Building.
  • Jackass Genie: The audience takes Plucky's suggestions and skew them to his disadvantage.
  • "King Kong" Climb: Plucky becomes "Duck Kong", rampages through a city, and does the inevitable tower climb with Shirley the Loon in his grasp. He encounters an actual ape at the top, holding a human girl. Plucky gives Shirley to the ape and sneaks off, thus accidentally falling off the tower under his own will.
  • Spiritual Successor: To the Looney Tunes short, "Duck Amuck".
  • Tempting Fate: At the end of the short, Plucky tells the viewers that he won't give them any more suggestions, and tells them to put what they really want on the screen. Cue Plucky turning into Buster and Babs.
