Season 9, Episode 7

Michonne’s group contends with whether or not they can trust each other on the way to Hilltop.

  • Authority in Name Only: Jesus was made leader of Hilltop by Maggie before her departure. However, since he feels he is not good enough to be leader, he pretty much has Tara do the real work around Hilltop.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Daryl’s scars from his abusive father are seen on his back, as they first were back in Season 3’s “Home”.
  • Dramatic Irony: Carol tells Daryl to make peace with Rick’s death, unaware that Rick is still very much alive. Daryl is also more accurate in invoking the Never Found the Body trope than he realizes.
  • Irony: When we first met him, Jesus was the one really running the show at Hilltop while Gregory didn’t do much to actually lead the place. With Maggie’s departure, Jesus has been ordered to take command in her absence, and he hates being leader, and most of the day-to-day work is handled by Tara.
  • The Lancer: Tara has become Jesus’ second-in-command at Hilltop.
  • Never Found the Body: Daryl admits to Carol that he never found Rick’s body since his apparent death, which has fueled his distant hope that Rick survived.
  • Put on a Bus: Maggie has taken Hershel with her off to Georgie’s community in parts unknown.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Henry is interested in weighing his chances with Enid.
    • Aaron and Jesus have a little playful tension between them. Though Word of God later clarified they never formed a relationship as they did in the comics, Tom Payne did not rule out the potential of them having a fling at least once during the Time Skip.
  • Tempting Fate: Tara lectures Jesus about needing to take responsibility as acting leader of Hilltop and that he needs to stop risking his life outside the walls due to how important he is. Jesus brushes her concerns off for the most part and promises he'll turn a new leaf once he gets back. He never makes it back as he is killed by a Whisperer in the following episode.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Jesus’s training Aaron has paid off, as Aaron is actually able to keep some pace with him in their sparring.
  • You Are in Command Now: Jesus has taken command of Hilltop in Maggie’s absence.
