"We're different than everyone. We're special. And that means we can't live normal lives. Here or anywhere."
Luther

"Öga för Öga" is the seventh episode of The Umbrella Academy's second season.

Five handily assassinates the Commission board. Before she assumes control of the Commission, the Handler gives Five ninety minutes to gather his siblings and return to 2019. The task is difficult — Luther and Diego are easy enough to convince, but the rest are scattered around the city, so the brothers split up.

Luther goes to Allison, who is unsure if she can return to 2019. Allison tries to convince Raymond to come back with her, but Raymond regretfully chooses to stay. However, this moment is interrupted by the Swedes, who attack the couple. Allison manages to end the fight by Rumoring the eldest Swede into killing his younger brother.

Diego goes to Klaus, who has let Ben possess his body so Ben can talk to Jill, a member of the cult. Despite Klaus trying to reclaim his body, Ben is able to bid farewell to the cult and take him to the alley. However, Diego has gone to give Elliot a burial, where Lila finds him. Lila tricks him into drinking drugged alcohol and presents him to the Handler as her boyfriend.

At the Coopers', meals are strained after Carl witnessed the two of them in the car. Carl threatens Vanya with sending Harlan away to an institution if she does not leave. En route home, she runs into Five, who tells her about the plan. Adamant about bringing Sissy and Harlan with her, Vanya rushes back to the house and convinces Sissy to come with her. However, the three of them are held up by highway patrol on the way back to the city. Vanya uses her powers against the men, but is knocked out cold.

Back at the alley, only Five, Luther, and Ben/Klaus make it. Frustrated, Five throws away the briefcase that would have taken them home.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • An Arm and a Leg: Five notably severs the arm of a Commission board member who was reaching for the telephone.
  • And I Must Scream: AJ is now the Handler's captive in a fishbowl where nobody can hear his screaming.
  • Batter Up!: Five smashes AJ's bowl with a cricket bat.
  • "Dear John" Letter: Sissy admits that she left Carl a goodbye note despite Vanya telling her not to. This gives Carl time to sic the cops on them and prevent their escape.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Carl, a white father in The '60s, considers Vanya's attraction to his wife a disease.
  • Due to the Dead: Diego is adamant upon giving Elliot a burial before they leave.
  • Eye Scream: Allison stabs one of the Swedes in the eye with a vacuum cleaner nozzle.
  • Feedback Rule: When the Handler speaks into a megaphone to announce her taking over the Commission, the device gives off a screeching sound.
  • Hope Spot: The Academy has a real chance at returning back to the present thanks to Five butchering the Board of Directors on the request of The Handler, however they only have a 90-minute window that wasn't a part of the original deal. This leads to only Klaus, Ben, Luther, and Five making it while Diego, Vanya, and Allison miss it due to being kidnapped, stopped by police, and being attacked by the Swedes.
  • Mook Horror Show: Five gruesomely assassinating the entire Commission board of twelve members.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After being Rumored into killing his brother, the last remaining Swede is absolutely distraught.
  • No Snack for You: Five goes berserk on a vending machine after it refuses to spit out the candy bar he paid for.
  • Pistol-Whipping: Jerry knocks Vanya unconscious with the butt of his shotgun.
  • Race Against the Clock: The siblings have ninety minutes to get to the alleyway before their escape route is gone forever.
  • Reveling in the New Form: Klaus allows Ben to possesses his body so he can finally interact with the world again; Ben is a little bemused with it at first... up until he reacquaints himself with things like touch and taste. This blissed-out joytrip ends with Ben collapsing into a bare patch of soil and groaning "I love dirt!"
  • Skewed Priorities: The hotel desk clerk catches Five in a room full of the dismembered bodies of the Commission board, wrestles him to the ground... and declares that he's going to pay for the vending machine he smashed before entering.
  • Slasher Smile: Five before going onto his killing spree.
  • Slipping a Mickey: Lila drugs Diego under the pretense of toasting in honour of Elliot.
  • Something Only They Would Say: To prove Ben-possessing-Klaus really is Ben, Diego asks him what they reprogrammed Allison's doll to say when they were children. Ben answers correctly.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: Five's brutal slaughter of the board members is set to "Polk Salad Annieā€.
  • Title Drop: Diego and Luther misread the words "Öga för Öga" written in blood on Elliot's floor, thinking it's a name. Five soon appears to correct them, stating that it's Swedish for "An Eye for an Eye."
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Klaus violently vomits out Ben (and a lot of other things) onscreen.
  • Waxing Lyrical: Klaus' final words to his cult is a quote from the Backstreet Boys' song "Everybody".
"Oh my God we're back again. Brothers, sisters, everybody sing! We're gonna bring the flavor. We're gonna show you how."
  • "You!" Exclamation: AJ to Five when the latter enters the board meeting with an ax.
