Recap / The Proud Family S 2 E 9 Pulp Boot Camp

Go To

Penny is sent to boot camp after her expose on the Gross Sisters starts to corrupt her into becoming one of them.

  • Aesop Amnesia: Played with. Penny has learned well enough to never be a bully again even if it means going undercover for a better story. However, she does start going undercover with being one of the skater kids soon after.
  • Becoming the Mask: Penny purposely becomes the bad girl so she can present an article good enough for the school newspaper. As she narrated, she spend less time on the paper and more time being P Gimmie for real to the point of becoming potentially worse than the Gross Sisters.
  • Character Narrator: The episode is told from Penny’s first person point of view via a voice over.
  • The Dark Side Will Make You Forget: Reversed. Penny teams up with the Gross Sisters to write her byline. What she experiences from seeing her family after escaping boot camp leads her to assume that her family has forgotten all about her.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Penny notably leaps over this line when she learns that she was directly responsible for driving her family and friends away from her, and that her quest was All for Nothing as it essentially destroyed her past life - leaving only P Gimmie. Thankfully, this begins Penny finally shedding out of her P Gimmie persona and going through boot camp with newfound determination so she can see her family again.
  • The Ditz: The guard at the tower is easily fooled by Penny making shadows of a bird and bunny with her hands in the spotlight and thinks they are actually real.
  • Divide and Conquer: Sergeant Snelly leaves Penny isolated from the people that care about her, e.g. Oscar and Trudy at home, and her friends opposing Penny’s bullying, making it easier for them to further vilify Penny and turn their backs on her even when she desperately needs help. This was implied to be part of the plan to have Penny realize she misses them a lot and is willing to work herself more just to see them again.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Sergeant Snelly to Penny Proud. It's implied that this is part of his act in regards to steering Penny back to her old good self and when Penny shouts that she is willing to go through more just so she can see her family again, he actually smiled from Penny's genuine determination.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While the Gross Sisters don't hesitate to steal money from the other students, they draw the line at joining Penny when Nubia tells her that they do not associate with real criminals.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: The newly-minted P Gimmie shows this repeatedly before her parents send her off to boot camp. It took BeBe and CeCe being scared of her to finally realize how far she has fallen.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Penny switches to a white shirt with a pair of black overalls after christening herself P Gimmie and later dons an orange shirt and a pair of camo jeans when she is at boot camp.
  • Evil Makes You Ugly: Penny to a lesser extent, since her skin becomes blue.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Penny invokes this as a way to get an inspiring story for the school newspaper. It works well for her in coming up with the story... only to take her P Gimmie persona a bit too well.
  • Going Native: Penny does an expose on the Gross Sisters, but ends up becoming just as bad as them, if not, worse.
  • Heel Realization: After bullying her fellow students and driving her family and friends away, Penny starts to realize that she's in the wrong and has no other choice but to return to Sargeant Snelly’s camp. Thankfully, it all works out in the end.
  • Hope Springs Eternal: Even after Penny is overcome by Sergeant Snelly’s control and the sadness from seeing her family and friends refusing to help her, she eventually returns to her old life after her offscreen return from boot camp. Plus, she even got her story published from it and things with her family and friends are better again after they heard the whole story.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Nubia refuses to help Penny because she’s become a real criminal instead of a bully and as she points out, there is a difference.
  • Let Me Tell You a Story: The episode is, by and large, told via Whole Episode Flashback with Penny narrating the events of what happened.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The young, bluey girl who looks similar to Nubia going through the obstacle course in boot camp and being drilled by Sergeant Snelly at the beginning of the episode? That's Penny Proud. She narrates how she got into this for the episode as her turning behavior shocks her family and her friends.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite how Penny was acting, Suga Mama did chase Mr. Moody with her cane when she heard why Penny acted the way she did. Showing despite not liking Penny’s new attitude, she still loves her granddaughter.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Mr. Moody complains to the heavens about his fall from being writer for the New York Times to becoming editor for a school newspaper as if this is a way for him to be tested. It's Penny remembering this makes her realize that she needs to come back to boot camp and test herself the same way.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Mr. Moody rejecting Penny's previous article led to her attempt at her next one getting approved by going undercover as being within the crowd of the Gross Sisters. It's implied that Suga Mama chased him with a cane after hearing the whole story from it hence why he told Penny to not go undercover again.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: The episode uses a Framing Device that is being recounted by Penny, although there are a few scenes in the story that she did not witness (like the scenes with Trudy, Oscar and Suga Mama) and is unlikely to have known the details of.
