Recap / The Proud Family S 2 E 8 Crouching Trudy Hidden Penny

Go To

Inspired by a Jack Stone martial arts movie that they saw, Penny, Dijonay, LaCienega, Zoey, Sticky and Duke decide to sign up for karate classes taught by the Chang Triplets' uncle, Parker Lee. After only a few weeks of learning fundamentals, they quickly get bored with their lessons until Frankie comes to show off a black belt that he earned at Jack Stone's School of Advanced Martial Arts in a single day. Penny's friends decide to switch schools, but Trudy, suspicious of the authenticity of Jack Stone's school, forces Penny to stay at Parker Lee's school to learn karate "the right way." Over the next few days, Penny and the Chang Triplets do some training (and mostly chores), while it's revealed at Jack Stone's "school" that his teachings are all smoke and mirrors as Penny's friends learn how to fake a punch from his movies, have their pictures taken for poses, and break a prop board that comes in two pieces. One day, Parker Lee signs his students up for the Wizard Kelly Martial Arts Tournament, which Penny's friends also participate in. Throughout the tournament, Penny and the Chang Triplets succeed in every challenge thanks to their actual training, while her friends all fail miserably due to Jack Stone's teachings being a sham.

Meanwhile, Oscar agrees to look after Bobby's car while he's on tour with Peaches and Herb. Bobby tells him not to push a particular button before leaving. Oscar takes it out for a spin with Felix, showing it off to some women until they get caught by their wives. Eventually, Oscar mysteriously loses the car. Bobby returns from the tour due to Peaches and Herb breaking up. He reveals that the car is disguised as a mailbox and that the button he told Oscar not to touch is actually an anti-parking ticket device. Bobby then gives Oscar all the mail (including the electricity bill) in the "mailbox" and drives off. As a result, the electricity goes out in the house.

Tropes:

  • Awkward Stoplight Moment: When Oscar and Felix are driving in Bobby's car, they get real tired of constantly hearing Bobby's song. When they stop at a stoplight, two women stop next to them and compliment them on their music and invite them to hang out while they shoot a music video, which Oscar and Felix happily accept. As the women drive forward, Trudy and Sunset stop next to them and shoot a Death Glare at them for flirting.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The Jack Stone School of Advanced Martial Arts is implied to be a total sham due to its lack of discipline, and those who went there stand no chance against Penny and the Chang Triplets. Zoey lampshades this by saying that she and her friends took pictures while the other faction studied.
  • Foil: Between Jack Stone's students and Parker Lee's students (including Penny). While both have their questionable moments (such as Parker Lee making the students wash his car), Parker Lee's approach to martial arts has some legitimacy to it. He wants his students to take the right steps to learn the arts, and will only reward them with the next belt once they've earned it. Meanwhile, Jack Stone only teaches his students how to look like martial artists, and gives them black belts without much in the way of hard work. As such, when Wizard Kelly Martial Arts Tournament rolls around, the margin between the two parties is quite clear. Even though they've only learned the basics, it takes Penny and the Lee triplets further in the tournament than their opponents, who can only flounder throughout the competition.
  • Forgot to Pay the Bill: Or, in this case, forgot to mail the bill. The episode ends with Bobby revealing the button he told Oscar not to push turns his car into a post office box so that Bobby doesn’t get parking tickets. And then, Bobby takes out all the mail in his car and tells him to put it all in the real mail. The power then goes out, meaning among that mail was the payment for the electric bill.
  • Gilligan Cut: When Peny mumbles and asks herself whether they'll have to wax Parker Lee's car, the next scene cuts to her and the Chang Triplets waxing Parker Lee's car.
  • Here We Go Again!: Penny tries to convince Trudy to let her join the Jack Stone school the same way she did for Parker Lee’s dojo. Both times, this offers a response from Suga Mama who says what she could have done with the money back in her day. Oscar is all too happy to come up with three items that are more ancient than she is.
  • Nonchalant Dodge: When Parker Lee instructs Penny to try to hit him, the latter is reluctant. Then when Penny keeps trying to hit Lee, he just effortlessly dodges her hits.
  • Right Behind Me: When Penny is venting her frustrations to her karate class, Parker Lee appears behind her, causing her to lampshade this trope.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Parker Lee gives Penny and his nieces the same chores that Mr. Miyagi gave to Daniel in The Karate Kid.
    • The antagonist of the Jack Stone movie is out of sync. A lampoon of English dubs of karate films in the 70s.
  • Truth in Television: Of all the inanimate objects Bobby's car has the ability to transform into to avoid a parking ticket, among them had to be a post office box, and what Bobby tells Oscar after he resolves the issue before driving away is very self-explanatory, since it's a federal crime to tamper with the mail. To add insult to injury, among the contents of the fake post office box was the Prouds' payment for the electric bill! This demonstrates just how serious of a crime it is.
Bobby: ♫You might want to put this in the mail before you go to jail!
