Recap / The Pretender S 3 E 05 Betrayal

Go To

Someone is stealing secrets from the Centre, and Broots is forced to team up with Jarod to find the true culprit.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Bad Habits: Damon disguises himself as a priest to commit a terrorist act at a church service.
  • Berserk Button: Jarod really does not like it when someone's misery is caused by the misuse of his own Simulations. In this episode, Jarod's work is corrupted for terrorist operations. Damon, the man behind it, also murdered one of Jarod's friends at the Centre just to break him. When Damon threatens to kill Broots in a final confrontation, Jarod shoots him dead.
  • Big "NO!": Jarod after Damon finishes off Kenny.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Broots is safe and reunited with Debbie, but Jarod is left troubled by killing Damon and the guilt he feels over Kenny.
  • Coincidental Broadcast: While Jarod and Broots are trying to figure out what Damon's target will be, Jarod turns on the television and immediately gets a news bulletin that provides the answer.
  • A Day in the Limelight: A Broots-centric episode in which he becomes a target of the villain of the week, and ends up joining forces with Jarod to save the day.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Broots over being in one of Jarod's hideouts while Jarod is still there. Jarod quips that he wasn't expecting it, either.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: A secret message is unraveled after Broots makes an offhand remark about what he's getting his daughter for her birthday.
  • Eyes Never Lie:
    • Broots doesn't know who Damon is at the time of the shooting in the data annex or at his house, but he says he could tell by the look in his eyes that the guy is a stone cold killer.
    • Averted with Jarod. Damon bases his You Wouldn't Shoot Me example on how Jarod doesn't have it in his eyes to kill, but Damon pushes him too far.
  • Gray Rain of Depression: It's dark and rainy in the scene where Jarod is feeling guilty about having killed Damon.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: Broots is listening to his cassette tape teaching French, while down at the data annex. It is loud enough that he doesn't hear a thing when Damon is gunning down assorted people.
  • Human Shield: Damon uses Broots as a shield while facing off with Jarod.
  • I Warned You: Sydney points out that he had explicitly warned the brass to not use Damon to try to manipulate Jarod. They didn't listen, and the scheme ultimately results in Jarod escaping.
  • Laser Sight: Damon uses a laser sight while taking out targets only a few feet away, in broad daylight, with a machine gun. There is a scene where one of his targets escapes because the person they're talking to notices the red dot on their head in the nick of time.
  • Makes Us Even: After Jarod is shot by Damon, he passes out and wakes up to find Broots tending to his wound. Jarod is surprised, saying Broots could get in good with Centre brass by bringing in the big prize. The thought never occurred to Broots, and he feels he owes Jarod one for today, anyway.
  • Meaningful Echo: The first shot of Broots shows him removing some Pop-Tarts from a toaster, and the first shot of Jarod shows him doing the same thing. In subsequent conversations, they each independently quote the same statistic about the supposed vitamin content of the Pop-Tarts. The meaningful part is that this ties into the episode's theme of Broots and Jarod having common ground.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: While Jarod was still at the Centre, he was befriended by Damon. He gained Jarod's trust and convinced him to complete a potentially dangerous Simulation. However, it was all a ruse to force Jarod's compliance and Damon killed Jarod's janitor friend Kenny to further break him. All this did, though, was confirm Jarod's doubts and fears about the Centre. He escaped a few weeks afterwards.
  • Only in It for the Money: When denounced for his efforts to kill countless people with a bio-weapon, Damon simply says he's just making a living.
  • Pet the Dog: Miss Parker gets to Debbie before anyone else and takes her home to keep her safe.
  • Pistol-Whipping: Broots knocks out a guard with the butt of his gun rather than shoot him; it's then pointed out that it's a good thing he made that decision because he was in such a panic when he picked up the gun that he never actually loaded it.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Damon takes Broots hostage and is confident that Jarod won't open fire. He is very wrong.
Damon: It doesn't make any difference. [gets ready to shoot Broots]
Jarod: It does to me! [shoots Damon]
  • Rage Breaking Point: To try to get Jarod to back off, Damon threatens to shoot Broots in the neck. Thinking of what happened to Kenny, Jarod gets so mad that he shoots Damon dead.
  • Unknown Character: The identity of the inside man for Damon remains unknown.
  • Villain Respect: Broots isn't much of a villain, per se, but he says he respects how Jarod always helps people when others won't.
  • You Wouldn't Shoot Me: Damon tells Jarod this at the climax. Normally he would be right, but it turns out Jarod is prepared to make an exception just for him.
