Chapter 44: Temple Frogs

Luz and Anne make a trip to the Thai temple, followed by a group of gossipers.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Camila can't help laughing when she learns why Anne always calls the Thai elders the "Ba train".
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Both Camila and the Boonchuys act as this for their daughters: Camila told the Thai elders about how Luz used to call shed snakeskin "pajamas" and Bee retains his habit of showing off Anne's baby pictures on his phone.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After Anne hugs Luz a second time in the garden after cheering her up, a camera flash goes off. The girls worry it's Jesse or her team, but it's actually Bee practicing his candid shots.
  • Brick Joke: Before leaving for the Thai Temple, Anne tries to get her father to promise he won't show Luz her baby pictures on his phone to no avail. As punishment for sneaking out of sample duty, Bee shows Luz the pictures to embarrass Anne.
  • Butt-Monkey: Jesse gets put through a lot, and she kinda deserves it.
  • Call-Forward: Bee starts practicing taking candid pictures for his Christmas cards.
  • Corpsing: In-universe example. Luz is trying very hard to keep from laughing when she's comforting Anne after seeing the photos of her as a baby.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Jesse Bliss and the gossipers have their own plot line in this chapter.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Instead of making an attempt to go see Dr. Jan (as she hasn't met her or even gone to the museum yet by the looks of it), Anne takes Luz to the Thai Temple garden.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Anne still makes an excuse to get out of work during a trip to the Thai temple. Meanwhile, the Plantars embrace Thai culture and use said skills to fight against Cloak-Bot's drones, getting exposed and accepted by the Thai community in the process.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Jesse tried pursuing Rico, Desi and Cindy to follow up Anne and Luz for the gossip blog. In the process, she fell into a thorn bush and got her clothes torn and disheveled, having her hair messed up as well. Her friends left her after being tricked into tasting spicy Gaeng Kua Kling. She got drenched through drinking water from the hose and her bike was destroyed by a robot.
  • Out of Focus: Amara falls into this a bit as she sits out going to Market Day at the Thai temple in favor of continuing research on returning to Amphibia. What makes this zig-zagged is that she scares off Jesse and Cindy when they try to break into Luz's house.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: One by one, Cindy, Desi and Rico quit on Jesse because trying to create gossip about Luz and Anne wasn't worth getting scared by Amara or burning their mouths on Bee's cooking.
  • Time Skip: A few weeks have passed since the events of the previous chapter, and once again Anne hasn't seen Luz in person once during that timeframe.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: After Luz confesses her insecurities about being a burden on her friends in their last three battles, Anne reminds her of how she did good in all those times (keeping Bog and Beatrix at bay, teaching Anne how to tap into her powers) and assures Luz she's far from a burden on everybody, lifting her spirits.
