Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 1 E 6 Oscars Ulcer

Go To

When Oscar leaves the table in the middle of a poker game, Felix calls in a doctor, who suggests that he could be developing an ulcer. Felix, determined to help his friend's health, begins interfering in every aspect of Oscar's life, driving him to the breaking point.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: After tending to Oscar again and mediating peace between him and Felix, the doctor tells them if this problem recurs, they should absolutely not hesitate to pick up the phone...and call another doctor.
  • Catchphrase: One of the pair's dates keeps referring to things as "plastic."
  • Gratuitous Spanish: Oscar drops a few Spanish words into his order to a waitress.
  • I'm Thinking It Over!: Felix invites his and Oscar's poker buddies over as usual, but says they should have a conversation rather than playing poker for the sake of Oscar's health. Speed has to think.
  • Neat Freak: Dr. Melnitz questions if Oscar's messy room really belongs to the clean apartment outside and refuses to make another house call unless Oscar cleans his room.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Felix knows something is wrong when Oscar walks out in the middle of a poker game, holding his stomach and moaning, despite having a good hand.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Oscar hates the peaceful week Felix puts him through as treatment, but he keeps his temper...until he has to deal with a night of boring stories rather than poker. Losing it, he storms out to a Mexican restaurant to take in a ball game and some spicy food.
