Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 1 E 7 I Do I Dont

Go To

The nervous Felix leaves for a wedding and some time later, Oscar gets slapped in the face by the would-be bride, who's looking for his roommate. After getting an explanation, Oscar finds himself roped into talking to the groom.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Blah, Blah, Blah: The minister places a few "blah, blah, blahs" in during the wedding rehearsal to hurry it along.
  • Extreme Doormat: When Oscar expresses disbelief that Felix ruined the wedding all on his own, Phyllis says that Harvey is easily influenced and has never made his own decisions.
  • Grew a Spine: After being "a jellyfish" (in Phyllis' words) for most of the episode, Harvey finally asserts himself (while admitting his role in their problem) in the face of his ex-fiancee almost leaving town. The combination reignites Phyllis' desire to marry him, and they ultimately do offscreen.
  • Longing for Fictionland: Harvey is very into movies and wishes for life to be like the romantic films that he enjoys watching, to the degree that one such film even shook his desire to get married. At the end, he acknowledges it and says he's over those expectations. Phyllis kisses him in adoration.
  • Misplaced Retribution: The bride, Phyllis Parker, smacks Oscar in the face with her bouquet when he opens the door. However, upon realizing that he isn't Felix, she apologizes.
  • Mistaken for Suicidal: Phyllis says it's all over after getting jilted. When she screams after Oscar sends her to his room to lie down, he and Felix understandably think she killed herself. She was just screaming at Oscar's room.
  • Old Maid: Phyllis, the bride, is 30 years old and has already been jilted once before. She's distraught that Felix kept her from getting married and feels that she lost her last chance. Oscar tries to reassure her that she's overreacting and that she's a very attractive girl. She immediately asks him if he wants to get married.
  • A Rare Sentence: While Phyllis and Felix are talking about how Felix went looking for Harvey the morning of the wedding, Oscar asks them to let him get a tape recorder because the conversation is unbelievable.
  • Unrequited Love Switcheroo: Oscar goes to talk to Harvey after Felix tries and fails. He eventually manages to get Harvey to come back and re-propose to Phyllis, but Phyllis turns him down flat. It turns out Felix thoughtlessly mentioned his divorce and even showed her the transcript of the trial.
