Recap / The Muppet Show S 4 E 20

Go To

Alan Arkin guest stars in what Floyd describes as "a very different show tonight". Some mishandling of Dr. Bunsen Honeydew's Ultra-Power Jekyll-Hyde Potion ends up causing Alan, Kermit, and other Muppets to turn into monsters!

Songs and Sketches

  • "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", performed by Lubbock Lou's Jughuggers and the Devil Himself.
  • "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah", performed by Alan Arkin and the Bun-Bun Brothers.
  • "I Got Rhythm", performed by Fozzie and Rowlf.
  • Pigs In Space: Something is causing the Swinetrek to tilt.
  • UK Spot: "You're No Good", sung by an Angel and the Devil.
  • Fozzie's Act: Fozzie ends up pushing some buttons with his Titanic joke.
  • "Let Me Go, Lover", sung by an old lady.
  • "Pig Shuffle", sung by Alan.

This episode has examples of

  • Big Ol' Unibrow: Alan Arkin sports the evil type after drinking some Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde formula and turning into an aggressive brute.
  • Big Red Devil: The Devil from the "Devil Went Down to Georgia" and "You're No Good" numbers has the red skin, the goatee, the horns, and a forked tail, with the addition of a sequined tuxedo. Which is also red.
  • Bunnies for Cuteness: The Bun-Bun Brothers are a group of friendly, wholesome bunnies who (attempt to) sing a cutesy song and beg Kermit for his protection after they're attacked by the Hyde-ified Arkin. Up until they drink some of the Jekyll-Hyde potion themselves, that is...
  • Compliment Backfire: After "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" number, Kermit tells the performers that they were good. The Devil isn't flattered. "Good!? I'm not supposed to be good!"
  • Dreadful Singer: Fozzie sings "I Got Rhythm", with Rowlf accompanying him on piano, but can't sing the song in rhythm, despite guidance from Rowlf.
Rowlf: No, no... Fozzie, hold on a second. Let me... let me make one little change here. [He writes something on the music sheet and hands it to Fozzie.] Okay. Now sing that.
    Fozzie: Yes, sir.
[Fozzie looks at the music sheet as Rowlf resumes playing.]
Fozzie: [singing] I don't got rhythm.
    Rowlf: Mmm-hmm.
Fozzie: [singing] I don't got rhythm.
    Rowlf: That's for sure.
Fozzie: [singing] I don't got rhythm.
Fozzie and Rowlf: [singing] Who could ask for anything more?
    Statler: We could!
    Waldorf: Yeah, earplugs!
Fozzie and Rowlf: [singing] Who could ask for anything more?
[Rowlf finishes playing, then shakes his head.]
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Fozzie's joke "What do you get when you cross the Atlantic with the Titanic? Halfway!" doesn't go over well with Statler, who claims to have been on the ship when it sank. And according to Waldorf, he still has the dress he wore to get on a lifeboat.
Fozzie: Just my luck, a Titanic survivor in the audience!
  • Jekyll & Hyde: Bunsen's potion causes this to happen to anyone who drinks it.
  • Killer Rabbit: The Bun-Bun Brothers become this after drinking the potion. They end up attacking Kermit and Arkin during the goodbyes.
  • Let Me at Him!: Miss Piggy is not pleased with Alan's closing song, "Pig Shuffle" due to its unflattering lyrics. Both Kermit and Scooter in vain try to hold her back. Of course, she gets the scare of her life when Alan turns into his Hyde form.
  • Unfortunate Item Swap: Bunsen, while taking what he thinks a glass of bicarbonate of soda to Alan, but is actually a similar glass filled with his Jekyll-and-Hyde potion, bumps into Beaker, who is holding the actual bicarbonate and tells Bunsen about the mix up. Bunsen then declares they need to unswitch the glasses, unaware that he had inadvertently done that while talking, resulting in him swapping them back. When Beaker tries to reverse his mistake, Bunsen ends up swapping them back again, resulting in him still winding up with the potion and giving it to Alan despite Beaker trying to warn him.

Statler: You think that Jekyll-Hyde stuff is expensive?
Waldorf: No, my wife has a whole glass of it every morning!
