Tropes That Appear In This Episode:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Eliot grins when the Muntjac throws Tick off her deck.
  • Bigger on the Inside: The Muntjac is made from sentient trees which allow her to control her interior and exterior dimensions independent of one another. What looks like a small fishing boat on the outside has interior space far larger than the boat.
  • The Blade Always Lands Pointy End In: Eliot does this with Father Poe's dagger after taking it, so the villagers can pick it back up.
  • Blank Book: The Tale of the Seven Keys only has one written chapter followed by a bunch of blank pages. Once Eliot finds the first key, the book fills in the next chapter. No skipping ahead.
  • Do with Him as You Will: Once Eliot has exposed Father Poe as a fraud, he takes the key and leaves Poe to the mercy of the villagers.
  • Driven to Suicide: Professor Lipson decides to jump off a tall building since magic is never coming back, after using a magic battery to have one last hurrah. She's also pissed that Mayakovsky cheated on her with Emily after everything she did for him. Fortunately, Quentin manages to grab her and drag her back up. Unfortunately, she loses her grip on the battery and it shatters on the street below.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Alice buys a kitten which hisses in the presence of the Lamphrey. It explodes when the Lamphrey gets too close.
Quentin: Sorry, officer, a friend's cat was sick... and exploded. You know, like they do.
  • Forced Transformation: Mayakovsky is morphed into a bear by Emily.
  • Funny Background Event: Fen keeps trying to hug Fray while Eliot is talking to the villagers, and Fray just keeps brushing her off in annoyance.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: We're not shown what happened to Father Poe. We only hear his screams as the villagers get their revenge.
  • I Always Wanted to Say That: Fen is happy she gets a chance to say "Don't talk to your father and I like that" to her daughter. Eliot gets in on it with "Go to your room."
  • Invisible to Normals: After it takes a host, the Lamphrey is invisible to humans. The kitten is the only reason Alice even knows it's coming. It's only visible the moment it decides to attack someone, as Quentin learns when it decides to trade in for his body.
  • Killed to Uphold the Masquerade: Father Poe kills a villager that witnesses him using the key to protect the village, as it's actually just cheap illusion magic he's using to keep himself in power.
  • Living Ship: The Muntjac was made from sentient trees, meaning she too is sentient. A mass of branches surrounds a beating heart below deck. Best not to insult her.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: Alice's kitten explodes when the Lamphrey gets too close.
  • Menacing Stroll: The Lamphrey never runs, just steadily walking towards its target.
  • Mundane Solution: The group needs to find Mayakovsky, but magic location is out of the question. Solution? Google.
  • Puppeteer Parasite: The Lamphrey worms its way into a human and takes control.
  • Revealing Cover Up: By killing the villager, Father Poe revealed his ruse because a blade wound looks nothing like the claw wound a shadowbat would give a human.
  • Solid Gold Poop: The kingdom is broke because the gold-crapping beetles that they were getting their income from have decided to declare independence, now that magic can no longer hold them in line.
  • Supernaturally Young Parent: Due to spending time in the Faerie Realm where time moves faster, Eliot and Fen's daughter is a teenager even though Fen gave birth to her two months ago. Margo and Eliot call it a trite plot twist that the Faerie Queen only thinks is clever because she doesn't have television.
  • That Thing Is Not My Child!: Eliot points out that there's no proof Fray is his daughter. However, Margo and Fen take it at face value and see a lot of Eliot in her. Eliot later admits to Fen that since Fray is explicitly a spy for the Faerie Queen, it would be easier if she weren't their daughter.
  • You Are Too Late: Quentin, Julia, and Josh figure out that Emily has one of the batteries, but Kady has already beaten them to her apartment and stolen it so she can heal Penny.
