"Zach Attack":
"Flying Solo":
After Lincoln accidentally ends up with the Glee Club's solo, Clyde decides to win it back by making Lincoln lose his voice.
- Continuity Nod: The Action News is seen again.
- Cordon Bleugh Chef: Mr. Bolhofner teaches his home ec class to make cricket cheesecake.
- Easily Forgiven: When Clyde confesses to Lincoln about making him lose his voice, Lincoln forgives him pretty much immediately and the two hug it out. Then again, this is Lincoln.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Clyde is jealous that he was passed over for the solo in favor of Lincoln, and plots to make Lincoln lose his voice.
- Hard Truth Aesop: Clyde thinks he’s better qualified to sing the solo because he wants the part more—but he really isn’t. Especially when the part calls for a voice that can sing at a specific tone.
- Hidden Depths: Lincoln is revealed to possess a naturally beautiful singing voice.
- High Hopes, Zero Talent: Zig-zagged, as Clyde is talented, but still not the right fit for the position. Clyde may have wanted the part more, but Lincoln was the only one qualified.
- Hopeless Auditionees: When Clyde finally gets to audition for the role after Lincoln loses his voice, his rehearsals keep failing due to accidents, or because he just can’t do the solo the way Mr. Budden intended.
- It's All About Me: Clyde’s attitude throughout the whole episode.
- Lost Voice Plot: Clyde deliberately causes Lincoln to lose his voice so he can’t do the solo. Lincoln spends a good part of the episode mute, using a handheld whiteboard to communicate.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Clyde after he finds out that he really isn’t good enough to sing the solo, and he sabotaged the one person that is, thus rendering their team’s chances of success nill.
- Never Bring a Friend to an Audition: Lincoln only came to the audition to support Clyde, but unintentionally ends up getting the solo himself.
- Pet the Dog: While normally a hardass teacher, Mr. Bolhofner manages to work with Zach in designing costumes for the middle school glee club.
- The Resenter: Clyde becomes one towards Lincoln since he spend months practicing for the solo, yet loses to Lincoln who didn’t train at all and wasn’t even trying to win.
- Running Gag: Mr. Budden drinking Flippees and getting brain freezes as a result.
- School Play: The Glee Club’s performance.
- Shout-Out: Clyde mentions having listened to Leon Cavaratti to improve his vocal chords. The name "Leon Cavaratti" is likely a pun on the late, great Italian opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti.
- Stepford Smiler: When Lincoln gets the solo, Clyde tries to hide his disappointment and claims he’s happy for Lincoln. His attempts at hiding his true feelings are not very convincing.
- Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Clyde made Lincoln lose his voice so that he could sing the solo, believing that having a month of training and practice and wanting to sing the solo more than Lincoln made him a better choice for the part. But it was only after Clyde tried to sing the solo, but kept making mistakes during practice, did he realize that he's actually physically unable to sing the solo correctly because all the training in the world can't change the way his voice sounds. Unlike Lincoln, whose voice actually has the right pitch and tempo for the part.
- With Friends Like These...: Clyde sabotages his best friend and tries to steal his position, just so he can get what he wants. He comes around though.
