Present Tense

Convinced that their scrapbook isn't good enough for Dad's birthday, the Loud kids seek out the perfect gift.

"Present Tense"

  • All for Nothing: As it turns out, Mr. Loud loves the scrapbook the kids had dismissed as not being a good enough present.
  • Angry Chef: Guy Grazer, a parody of Gordon Ramsay. The Louds refund their ticket for a private cooking class with him due to their father's sensitivity to raised voices.
  • Birthday Episode: Mr. Loud celebrates his birthday in this episode.
  • Broke Episode: Played with. By the end of the episode, the Loud kids can't afford to try and get their dad a different gift, only having pocket change left.
  • Call-Back: Lincoln and his sisters shop at a tie store, remembering how much their dad loves ties.
  • Character Development: When Lori shows the others Carol's picture of what she did for her father's birthday yesterdaynote , she isn't jealous of what Carol did. Rather, she (and the others) are concerned that their own scrapbook present isn't good enough for their own father.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: As Mr. Loud and his kids look at the scrapbook they made for him and reminisce, the episode ends with Leni recalling a very familiar memory of her own.
Leni: And I don't think we'll ever forget that time we made you that scrapbook.
    Mr. Loud: Oh, Leni...
  • Expy: The angry chef that the kids watches is clearly a send-up of Gordon Ramsay.
  • Hand Gagging: Luna puts her hand over Luan's mouth to prevent her from making more of her usual puns.
  • I Am Not Weasel: The kids mistake a crystal porpoise for a crystal dolphin, and Lisa realizes the confusion when she finds that the figure has a truncated snout.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Lincoln and his sisters run out of both time and money trying to get their dad the perfect birthday present, but in the end, it is revealed that he opened the scrapbook while they were away, and he loves it because of all the good times he and his kids spent together.
  • Shown Their Work: Unlike most cartoons, dolphins and porpoises are portrayed as distinct cetaceans, with the latter being differentiated from the former by having a blunt snout. As noted in I Am Not Weasel above.
  • Tears of Joy: At the end of the episode, the kids hear their father crying and assume that he is disappointed at not getting anything from them. When they try to apologize, they find out that their father is crying Tears of Joy because he has opened the scrapbook they got him and he loves it.
  • Unpleasant Animal Counterpart: Porpoises to dolphins. At the aquarium, Lynn Sr. had fun with a friendly dolphin, but got mugged by a sneaky porpoise.note
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Carol isn't even physically present in the episode, but the picture she posted on social media is what causes the episode to transpire.

Any Given Sundae

Lily hears the parents mention ice cream if the kids are good, so she uses baby smarts to avert sibling disasters.

"Any Given Sundae"

  • All for Nothing: Narrowly averted. At first, it seems that Lily's efforts to get a sundae were all for naught. Luckily, she's able to get herself a sundae at Flip's store.
  • Art Shift: Lily's Imagine Spots throughout the episode are in a cruder art style than the rest of the show.
  • Brainy Baby: Lily is much smarter and more reactive to her surroundings in this episode than she normally is. This episode shows her pulling off things that would make Tommy Pickles proud.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: Lola and Lana fight over the TV remote when the former wants to watch a pageant show, and the latter wants to watch a show about penguins. Lily manages to snatch the remote from them and change the channel to Penguin Pageants.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Lily. This time, she's the protagonist instead of a Living Prop, playing a proactive role in the story.
  • Disney Acid Sequence: Lily's Imagine Spot of what it'd be like when she tries her first ice-cream.
  • The Diaper Change: Invoked. When the Loud family decide to head home after the ice cream shop closes, Lily deliberately poops her diaper to get them to stop at Flip's so Mr. Loud can change her and she can get a sundae there afterwards.
  • Dramatic Irony: When Lily's ice cream is ruined and everyone sees the ice cream shop closed early, Lynn Sr. angrily wonders why they didn't advertise them closing up early, unaware that they did so on the television earlier.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: After Lily fails to eat her first sundae, Luan tries to cheer her up with ice cream puns during the ride back home. Lola has to call her out for this.
Luan: You'll get that ice cream sundae, Lily, perhaps when the road isn't so rocky! Don't have a mint chip on your shoulder about this!
Lola: Luan, read the room! [shows Luan a still-sorrowful Lily]
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Luan's prank, which involves using a boxing glove on her mom, gets used against her, as Walt sends the boxing glove into her face.
  • Hope Spot: It seems Lily will get to taste her sundae, with her family cheering her on. However, a pigeon comes by and swoops down, causing her to drop the ice cream.
  • Imagine Spot: Lily has them throughout the episode; first of incidents that could lead to her parents to go back on their promise to get the children ice cream, then of her family cheering her on as she finally gets to taste her ice cream.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Lily, when she drops her ice cream sundae. There's no snot involved, but boy, is her crying loud, and her face is distorted too.
  • Lost Food Grievance: Lily does not take it well when a pigeon swoops down and causes her to drop her ice cream just as she's about to taste it. It gets worse when the family tries to buy her another one, only to find out that the ice cream shop closed early that day.
  • Pesky Pigeons: A pigeon swoops down at Lily just as she is about to eat her sundae, causing her to drop it.
  • Reality Is Unrealistic: Rita says that Flip's wisdom teeth grew back, which confuses her husband. This can actually happen in real life, albeit in very rare cases.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Lola's eyes become outright demonic right as she pounces on Lana for the TV remote.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Lily was practically two steps ahead of the other Louds for the entire episode. In fact, Lisa is the one to realize Lily had planned on getting her sundae all along, only for Mr. Loud to dismiss that likelihood.
  • Stylistic Suck: The rest of the Louds in Lily's imagination are depicted in a rather crude art style.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: The episode ends with Lily getting her sundae at Flip's. Thus, she gets to taste her first sundae after all.
