Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S1 E19 "Off Duty Cop"

Go To

The ninteenth episode of the first season of The Looney Tunes Show.

After finding out that the main character of his favorite show, Off-Duty Cop, is just an actor playing his role, Daffy decides to take matters into his own hands and become an off-duty cop himself with the help of Porky. Meanwhile, after learning of his abnormal levels of caffeine due to coffee, Bugs is sworn off of the stuff, on recommendation from the doctor. To fill this void, Bugs turns to a new drink called Spargle, only to become worse off when he runs out.

This episode features the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote short, "Butte E. Fail".

This episode provides examples of:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Yosemite Sam is proven guilty of aiding and abetting the Spargle scam when he pleads he was just an innocent sales representative and the FBI head asks if he knew he was selling a dangerous product. Cue Oh, Crap! from Sam and running from the FBI agents nakednote  and likely arrested for public nudity as well.
  • Cat Scare: While Daffy is searching for Bugs in a dark room, a cat randomly jumps out at him.
  • Can-Crushing Cranium: Bugs does this with a Spargle can after decorating the house with Christmas decorations.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Bugs' talk with Sam to get him more Spargle sounds an awful lot like an addict confronting his dealer.
  • Elevator Gag: In the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote short, "Butte E. Fail", Wile E. is climbing a cliff to get at the Road Runner. He feels around for a hold and stumbles onto an elevator on the cliff wall, which he then takes to the top.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Daffy repeatedly insists to Porky that the chauffeur from the Off-Duty Cop show was never given a name, just “Chauffeur”. He even shows Porky an episode to prove it, but it immediately reveals that the chauffeur actually did have a name: Brandon Steel.
Daffy: That was a stupid episode.
  • Faux Horrific: Porky is horrified when Bugs threatens to write all over his face with a marker... because it's permanent ink.
  • Family-Friendly Firearms: In the climax, Daffy pursues Bugs with a stapler instead of a gun. It even makes a sound like a Dramatic Gun Cock when he uses it.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: The employees at the Spargle supplier, who didn't react at all when Daffy threatened to arrest them in his Off Duty Cop persona, immediately flee en masse as soon as the actual FBI arrive. It's then explained that the entire Spargle operation was actually a scam, and the employees were knowingly manufacturing a dangerous product.
  • Foreshadowing: When Bugs first tries Spargle, Sam casually remarks that he wouldn’t drink it himself. It’s later revealed that Spargle is actually a dangerously addictive substance, and Sam was fully aware of this the whole time.
  • G-Rated Drug: Bugs' obsession with Spargle leaves him acting like a drug addict. It is then subverted when Spargle turns out to have actually been made with an unspecified illegal substance.
  • Giving Them the Strip: Sam slips out of his Modesty Towel to escape from the police when they ask him if he knew he was selling an illegal substance.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Sam chastises Bugs and Daffy's bizarre standoff in the lobby as inappropriate behavior in a place of business, all while wearing a Modesty Towel (In his defense though, Bugs didn't let him change).
  • Implausible Deniability: Daffy insists that St. James' chauffer has No Name Given, even though in the videotape, it was revealed that his actual official name is Brandon Steel, only for Daffy to remark "That was a stupid episode."
  • Instant Taste Addiction: Bugs reluctantly purchases a new beverage from Yosemite Sam, just to be rid of him. The beverage is Spargle, and Bugs takes a liking to it, that quickly develops into a fixation. It gets to the point where Bugs is pestering Sam for more Spargle. A Justified Trope, in that one of Spargle's ingredients is an addictive narcotic, which causes the FBI to shut down the business and arrest everyone involved.
  • Loophole Abuse: In The Stinger, it's revealed that Dr. Weisberg told Bugs that just one cup of coffee a day can't hurt. However, since Dr. Weisberg didn't say anything about the size of the coffee cup, Bugs drinks his coffee from a really gigantic coffee cup.
  • Motor Mouth: Bugs as a result of drinking Spargle.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Bugs is going through serious withdrawal thanks to the Spargle, Daffy actually asks what's wrong with him.
  • Pet the Dog: After seeing Bugs suffering serious withdrawal and literally begging for more Spargle, the lead FBI agent tells two others to get him to a doctor immediately.
  • Running Gag: People writing on Porky's face with a marker.
  • Sanity Slippage: Bugs goes insane after he runs out of Spargle.
Daffy: What is wrong with you?
Bugs: Nothing! There's nothing wrong with me! (grins, then smashes a hole in the wall with his fist, freaking Porky and Daffy out) I've gotta get more Spargle.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Daffy spends the whole day mimicking Steve St. James and randomly handcuffing people, which eventually results in him getting arrested for impersonating a police officer.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Porky doesn't get arrested along with Daffy. The FBI agent notes that impersonating a chauffeur is pathetic but not illegal.
  • Trailers Always Lie: The teaser for this episode made it look like when the FBI agent said, "It's pathetic, but it's not illegal" he was referring to Daffy. He was actually talking to Porky about pretending to be a chauffeur. Turns out what Daffy was doing (impersonating a cop) actually was illegal.
