Recap / The Legend Of Zelda 1989 E 5 Sing For The Unicorn

Go To

During Link's umpteenth attempt to win a kiss from Princess Zelda, Ganon sweeps in with his latest capture, a flying unicorn, and successfully kidnaps and flies away with King Harkinian. Hot on his trail, Link and Zelda rush into Ganon's lair to rescue the king, though Zelda can't help question where and how Ganon managed to acquire the unicorn.

The episode contains examples of:

  • Action Girl: Sing is a ninja who can fire magic lasers from two Sai-like weapons just like Link's sword.
  • Bottomless Pits: The Pit Room where King Harkinian is locked in; unless Link and Zelda save him, he'll be falling forever until he dies.
  • Catch a Falling Star: King Harkinian is saved by Sing's unicorn swooping in to catch him while Link and Zelda were too far away to grab him in time.
  • Distressed Dude: King Harkinian, since he is not only captured and spirited away by Ganon in front of Link, but he's also placed in a room where the floor slowly disappears and if the heroes don't surrender the Triforce of Wisdom or save him within an hour, he'll fall to his death.
  • Don't Touch It, You Idiot!: While the two heroes are venturing through the underworld to save King Harkinian, wondering where Ganon got the unicorn, Link warns Zelda not to touch the Armos statues, as doing so brings them to life and will attack the duo on sight. Guess what Zelda does while asking "Why?". In the ensuing battle, she accidentally touches another and Link is thrown into touching a third.
  • Dramatic Unmask: Once Link and Zelda realize that the "creature" attacking them is a human, Zelda holds her still so Link can unmask her to find out the identity of the mysterious person lurking inside Ganon's lair, only to reveal that it's a woman.
  • Far East: Though it's not hinted or explained exactly where Sing and her unicorn are from, but based on her ninja attire, vaguely-Asian appearance, and speaking a different language from Link and Zelda, it'd wouldn't be a far stretch to say she hails from an East-Asia-inspired region.
  • Race Against the Clock: King Harkinian is put in to a room with a bottomless pit that gradually opens within one hour. Unless Link and Zelda find him, he will fall forever until the day he dies. Luckily, Sing and her unicorn save him just in time.
  • Samus Is a Girl: In fact, Link and Zelda both thought the ninja wasn't even human at all and referred to her as an "it" even after finding out that she wasn't a monster. However, the fact that Sing was actually a woman the whole time still manages to catch them by surprise, earning a Wolf Whistle from Link, who seems to act like meeting a female adventurer like him is "a dream come true".
  • Winged Unicorn: Ganon successfully captures a white unicorn with wings, which is largely called either a "unicorn" or a "flying unicorn" without any particular distinction. It seems to have come from a faraway land with a vaguely-Asian woman named Sing, though no other information is given. However, it is treated as an unusual find because in the princess' words, "beautiful creatures aren't his style".
  • Wolf Whistle: Link's immediate response to finding out the ninja is a pretty woman results in a low, impressed whistle from him.
