Recap / The Legend Of Zelda 1989 E 1 The Ringer

Go To

The first episode of the series. It opens with Link complaining about his new pampered life in the castle, only to take it back when he catches a glimpse of Princess Zelda on the balcony. After a group of Moblins fail to steal the Triforce of Wisdom, Ganon disguises himself as a wizard to enter a contest for amateur magicians, which allows him to get close to the castle unnoticed. During the contest, he casts a spell to transforming the small lizard that Zelda is holding into a giant dragon, allowing Ganon to sneak away and steal the Triforce of Wisdom while Link and Zelda are busy with the dragon.

  • Animate Inanimate Object: Both pieces of the Triforce are shown to be able to speak, though it's one of the rare instances in which the Triforce of Power actually talks, though it only has one line of dialogue within the entire episode. Essentially, it only speaks just to point out that the contest is only for amateur wizards, not a "pro" like Ganon.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Invoked by Link, as he ties his belt around both him and Zelda so they can not only fight back-to-back against a crowd of Stalfos, but also use each other as leverage to kick away any that come too close.
  • Bag of Holding: It's the first episode that directly shows how Link can carry so many weapons, as he directly shoves a Magic Bow by simply pushing it into his bag, and it disappears in bright light.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The Magic Bow that one of the Moblins dropped has a very eye-catching bone design, which is later used by Princess Zelda when they're surrounded by Stalfos.
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Subverted. While Zelda is given a bow compared to Link's sword, both weapons are primarily used to shoot lasers at enemies, and she even kicks away a Stalfos while using Link to balance herself at one point.
  • Lying Finger Cross: When Link refuses to remove the belt that's tying him and Zelda together, she agrees to give him a kiss but tells him not to make a habit of it. He promises, but the camera pans over to Link crossing his fingers behind his back.
  • Revealing Reflection: Link uses his sword's reflection to keep track of the Moblin behind him before zapping him.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat: One amateur wizard at the contest wears a blue robe and star-patterned pointy hat, complete with a white Wizard Beard. Ironically, despite his appearance suiting a Wizard Classic, he only knows minor spells like instantly growing plants.
  • Villain Teleportation: Ganon can freely teleport inside the Underworld, though it's limited whenever he's outside of it, which Ganon openly admits when discussing his plans to sneak into the castle.
  • Wolf Whistle: Link makes a pretty loud whistle at Princess Zelda when he spots her wearing her nightgown on the balcony, which rightfully makes her feel pretty uncomfortable especially since he's watching her at a much higher elevation. After Spryte hands her the robe, she storms off in a huff, and eventually returns to his room to give him a good slap on the face as soon as he opens the door.
