Recap / The Legend Of Zelda 1989 E 2 Cold Spells

Go To

It's the first day of spring, which unfortunately means time to clean the entire castle according to Princess Zelda and Link fakes a cold to get out of spring-cleaning. After a Moby reports back to Ganon on the situation, he travels to the castle for an opportunity to steal the Triforce of Wisdom himself, and casts a spell on Spryte to mess with her magic. The next thing she knows, what should've been a simple cleaning spell ends up causing several brooms and cleaning equipment to go rogue, attacking her and trying to flood the place.

The episode provides examples of:

  • All Animals Are Dogs: Ganon treats a Gohma, a giant crab-like enemy, like it's a pet. When he tries to sic it on Link and Zelda while they're trapped in a giant holding jar, he calls it by whistling and announcing "Here, boy! Dinnertime!".
  • Aside Glance: Link winks at the audience for a brief moment when his fake cold works on Spryte.
  • Bag of Holding: Similar to the previous episode, Link gives Zelda a weapon to use from his bag, though this time it's a set of two bows and two boomerangs. While they can grow to a bigger size, they initially appear so tiny that all four fit in the palm of his hand when he's handing them to her.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Ganon tampering with Spryte's magic actually enhances its power, which she later uses to her advantage by breaking open the magic-resistant giant jar that Link and Zelda are trapped in.
  • It's All My Fault: Not knowing that Ganon altered her magic, Spryte follows Link and Zelda into the underworld because she felt guilty that they had to abandon guarding the Triforce to save her from what she thought was her own spells going wrong.
  • Men Can't Keep House: Link's bedroom has piles of dirty clothes across his bedroom, which stink to the point where smothering a Moby for a few moments causes disorientation.
  • Playing Sick: As soon as Princess Zelda dumps spring-cleaning duties onto Link, he decides to fake a cold in order to weasel his way out of it. It works on Spryte, but not on Zelda, though she lets him stay in bed anyway.
  • Trash of the Titans: Link's room is full of piles of dirty laundry, which stinks so bad that Zelda uses it to her advantage by sticking a Moby's head in it, forcing it to slowly fly out of the room in a daze from the smell.
