Recap / The Interns S 6 E 19

Go To

Bykov and Lyuba suffers from extreme boredom. But fortunately, Lobanov shows up, and now Bykov has an idea how to use him for their amusement — by creating a fake patient with surname "Manakin" for Semyon and Gleb. After wasting some time just doing nothing, they realises that thy can't find that patient anywhere. To make it look like they're still working, they fakes "Manakin's" blood sample, by using Lobanov's. Bykov tells Lobanov that, according to this sample, "Manakin" is in danger, and must do all kinds of tests. Only after milking the situation for all its worth, Bykov reveals the truth to him.

Varya's patient apparently wants to sell his kidney to deal with his debts... or so Varya thinks. As Bykov finds out, the guy is an architect, who already spent all advance money for project, and still has nothing to show, so he decides to play sick in order to buy more time. Bykov tells him to check his kidneys if he has a legitimate appointment and get out, but doesn't inform Varya about it, which results in her lying to the patient that he has a serious illness. Only when this screws the patient's only chance to convince his client to give him a second chance, Varya learns that she did a serious mistake.

Kisegach has a visitor from ministry; he tells her that she would be reassigned to another hospital in Zvenigorod, to bring it to old one's level; her old position would be taken by another doctor, assigned by ministry. And that replacement is already here. Fortunately, she is Kupitman's old lover, so maybe he would help to kick her out? Kupitman tries to talk with a "new Chief Doctor"... and she suggests him a promotion. Kupitman almost sides with her, but Bykov's negative reaction motivates him to try and convince his old lover to leave; unfortunately, he fails.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Deadpan Snarker: When Varya overhears her patients' phone talk about his debts, after which he tells her that he wants to check his kidneys, she tells Bykov that she thinks that patient wants to sell one of his kidneys. Bykov replies with a question wether he also wants to sell his brain: Varya could use one.
  • Here We Go Again!: After dealing with Lobanov and Romanenko, Bykov gives the same "patient" to Phil, expecting that Phil would do it right and show Gleb and Semyon what they really were supposed to do. Phil instead repeats the same mistakes as them.
  • Induced Hypochondria:
    • Believing that her patient wants to sell his kidney (he doesn't, Varya misinterpreted his phone talk), Varya tells him that his kidneys are in terrible condition, scaring him to no end. Only when the patient tells his client that he must refuse his project, Varya learns the truth.
    • Knowing that Lobanov just used his own blood instead of "Manakin's", Bykov lies that "Manakin" has some terrible condition and must do all sorts of tests to learn more, including MRI (and, of course, do a lavement, just in case). Lobanov gets actually scared by this, and when his temperature raises (because of stress), he starts panicking. Only then Bykov reveals that this was a part of his prank.
  • Invented Individual: Bykov creates a fake patient for Semyon and Gleb, just out of boredom.
  • The Mistress: Kisegach's replacement is, in fact, Kupitman's old lover (he cheated with her on both first and second wives). Now, his connections with her is Anastasia's only chance to kick her out. He tries... but when she suggests him to be her deputy, he sides with her. He realises that he did the wrong thing when Bykov scolds him for his betrayal, and (unsuccessfully) tries to seduce her into abandoning this position... and finds out that she's not that interested in him to do so anyway (while also spoiling their relationship, so they are on opposite sides now).
  • Out-of-Context Eavesdropping: Varya overhears her patient's phone talk about his debts, and when he tells that he's here to check his kidneys, she instantly jumps to conclusion that he wants to sell one of them. Bykov learns that he doesn't, but decided to not tell Varya.
  • Out of Focus: Besides his brief appearance for one gag in the end of the episode, Phil has no role in this episode.
  • Playing Sick: Varya's patient is an architect, who already spent all advance money for project, but still has nothing to show to his client; so, he has a plan to pretend to be sick to buy some time.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Varya never bothers to check wether her patient really plans to sell his kidney, while Bykov (who learns the truth himself) never bothers to explain this to Varya, thinking that it would be funnier this way. As result, the only one who suffers is Varya's patient, because Varya, in misguided attempt to protect him, screws his only change to salvage the situation with his client.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: While the man from ministry insist that this is actually a "reward" for her hard work, Kisegach is definitely not happy with her assignment to Zvenigorod, since she wants to stay in Moscow. But replacement is already here and it would not be easy to kick her out. Kupitman tries to exploit his past ties with her, but fails.
  • The Slacker: After receiving their (fake) patient, Gleb and Semyon spends two hours doing nothing before finally deciding to at least check who it is, because Bykov would not give them patient with something serious anyway.
  • Snipe Hunt: Gleb and Semyon spends the whole episode searching for the patient "Manakin". Manakin doesn't exist, being Bykov's and Lyuba's prank. To make it look like they're still working, and not wasting time on searching, Semyon take his own blood sample to use as "Manakin's", which Lyuba gives to Bykov.
