Recap / The Interns S 13 E 7

Go To

To make up for refusing her advances in the morning, Gleb suggests Sophia to check which places in the hospital would fit for making love; she absolutely likes this idea. Sophia invites Gleb into a VIP ward, with clear intentions, but Gleb gets sent on another task by Bykov, an instead sends Alexei, to learn just what Sophia wanted. Naturally, Lyosha busts Sophia half-naked (and very angry). To not repeat the situations like this, Sophia warns Gleb that all such requests are invitations to have sex. But she again gets busted by Alexei, this time because he gets sent by Lyuba to check on Sophia. After that, the two talks with Alexei himself, asking him to not go to archives, to not ruin everything yet again. But Alexei gets ordered to go there by Bykov, which he can't disobey. He tries to warn them, but they don't hear him, and when he enters, he interrupts them mid-process. They only manages to find some privacy when Alexei finally leaves home, and they stays on a night shift together.

When Timur annoys Bykov with his "funny" stories to no end, Bykov asks him whether he may spend a whole day silent. Like really, a whole day. To make it more interesting, they both would bet money on it. Unfortunately, Timur's first task involves interrogating his patient. Timur deals with this clearly rigged task by giving his patient the list of questions, and leaving. But Bykov refuses to give up so easily, and starts provoking Timur into saying at least something, through various means: asking him in the elevator which floor he needs, suddenly scaring him, causing him pain, etc. He even cheats by sending Lyuba to "interrogate" him about the bet, while hiding nearby, but Timur doesn't fall for this. Then Bykov uses even dirtier tactic, and threatens Timur with night shifts on weekends unless he objects to it. When Timur's mother calls, it seems that there's no way for him to win (he can't risk ignoring the call, it may be something important if she called him during working hours)... but Timur manages to "talk" with her without anything more than one single "hm" to confirm that he may hear her, with mother saying everything she wants and hanging up. Bykov decides to cooperate with Lyuba (who also betted on Bykov) against Timur, and use the dirtiest tactic they can think of — send Polina to check on Timur, who "acts weirdly". Polina, of course, fails to get any info from Timur, and jumps into conclusion that he's acting like this because his grandma has died! He always acted like this after visiting her (she doesn't feel all that well), but if he's that quiet, it means that something really bad has happened. Bykov can't tell her the truth without ruining his plan. Polina tries to comfort Timur, by bringing his favourite cake and talk with him. This goes for quite some time, but by the point when she starts giving Timur massage, Bykov returns and informs Polina about their bet and real reason why Timur is so silent. She reacts as well as may be expected, and refuses every Timur's attempt to apologise. But at least he'd won the bet...

Kupitman, annoyed with Phil being too distracted to work, asks what's going on, and learns about Katia. Kupitman, feeling some compassion, offers his "help" with impressing Katia, by pretending that it's Phil who's boss here, earning him some free points — only to realise that Phil has lied to be a surgeon, because he finds the fact that he's a venereologist "shameful", and get offended. But despite this, he still tries to help Phil, and even calls his friend in Surgery, to help Phil's cover story. Phil "introduces" Katia to the Surgery, but she finds it weird that everyone acts so friendly — unnaturally friendly. Then one of the doctors starts telling stories about Phil's heroism. When Phil introduces Katia to Kupitman, he interrupts the Head of Surgery and calls Kupitman the "Head of Traumatology" instead of his actual position, not risking even mentioning Venereology near Katia. Everything seemingly goes smooth, but then they gets informed of a new patient, and the Head Surgeon suggests to see Phil "in action", ignoring Phil's attempts to refuse. Now, Phil has to either admit to Katia that he lied about being a surgeon, or proceed with operation and prove that he's not a surgeon by failing it (potentially with catastrophic consequences for the patient). In near panic, Phil tries to make a cut on the patient's body — and "patient" suddenly awakes, angrily asking whether he went nuts (with actual surgeon in the same room asking the same). This is when Phil finally faints. He awakes in Kupitman's office, saying that he's sorry. Kupitman angrily asks him for what he's sorry: for nearly killing the patient; for lying to his girlfriend; or for disrespecting his profession, his boss and his friend? Not even Katia finds anything shameful in Phil being a venereologist, not understanding why he tried to hide it.

This episode provides examples of:

  • The Bet: Bykov and Timur have a bet; Timur would win if he manages to remain silent for the rest of the day. Timur wins, though at the cost of damaging his standing with Polina even more.
  • Honesty Is the Best Policy: Phil wants to impress Katia by showing her the hospital, but he wants to avoid revealing that he's a venereologist. Kupitman, who was offended by him talking about their profession like it's something shame-worthy, offers to "help" with his new plan anyway and cooperates with actual surgeons to make it happen, only to then make Phil trapped in the "operation room", with only option being to just tell the truth; he instead tries to do the "surgery", knowing nothing about how to, and faints when the "patient" rises up and calls him out. When he awakes, even Katia calls him out, also telling that there's nothing shameful in being a venereologist.
  • Impossible Task: After tricking Timur into The Quiet Game, Bykov orders him to... interrogate his patient. Timur deals with it without failing the bet, by giving the patient a list of questions.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Phil is afraid of telling Katia that he's a venereologist, as he doesn't know how she would react. His choice of words offends Kupitman (a venereologist himself), as it implies that venereology is something shame-worthy.
  • Interrupted Intimacy: First two times, Lyosha walks into Sophia being Ready for Lovemaking (she was expecting Gleb). The third time, knowing what's going on, he tries to inform her and Gleb that he must enter (which they dont't hear), and actually walks on them mid-action. They only manages to "do it" without problems after staying on a night shift while Alexei goes home.
Gleb: Are you sure that you never joined some social movement, like "stop-sex" or something?
  • Lethally Stupid: Phil, if you clearly know nothing about surgery, why you even tried to cut up your "patient" instead of just admitting that you lied about being as surgeon? Scalpel — and human (he's not a patient, though; it's another doctor) — are real. Everyone calls him out on this.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: Subverted. While Gleb and Sophia planned to find more "exotic" places for sex in the hospital, something always goes wrong, resulting in Sophia staying alone and being busted by Alexei who goes to her current location for entirely unrelated reasons. Then the two stays on a night shift, and decides to put it to best use.
  • Purple Prose: Kupitman, defending Venereology, gives Phil a long, nearly poetic speech about their "sacred duty" as venereologists — like only he can.
  • The Quiet Game: Bykov gets annoyed by Timur telling him "funny" stories, and offers a bet: whether Timur can spend the rest of his shift without saying anything, for any reason. Bykov employ some really dirty tactic to win no matter what, but ultimately fails... but Timur would rather lose the bet than win at this cost.
  • Pet the Dog: Kupitman, learning that Phil has invited his girlfriend to see the hospital, offers to pretend that it's Phil who's boss here, and Kupitman is his subordinate, so Phil would impress her. But Phil then tells that he'd lied about being a surgeon, out of shame, which offends Kupitman.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Timur wins the bet, but his silence leads to Polina thinking that he's worrying about his grandma and trying to comfort him; when she learns that nope, it's purely for the money, she gets angry at him, and Timur spoils his relationship with her even further, with her refusing to even listen to his apologises. Considering that Polina was the reason why he even moved there in the first place...
  • Ready for Lovemaking: Sophia, (un)dressed and in seductive pose, waits for Gleb to enter and proceed to "most important part"... but instead it's Lyosha who walks in. Cue Sophia's angry screams.
  • Schmuck Bait: It's so painfully clear that Lyuba asking Timur about his bet with Bykov is actually a trap (Bykov hides nearby, waiting until Timur would answer to Lyuba, failing the bet), Timur doesn't fall for it.
  • Take a Third Option: Timur has to interrogate the patient. Talking means losing the bet. Not talking means failing his job. He just gives the patient the list of questions and records the answers.
