Recap / The Interns S 13 E 6

Go To

Phil still believes that he and Katia are made for each other, not knowing that she's a prostitute. Polina thinks that it's time to inform him, because the more they wait, the more painful it would be, and Timur agrees with her. But since Timur is out of good ideas, Polina decides to deal with problem by herself. Polina warns Phil that there're some... issues with Katia. Namely, she had a lot of males before him. Like, really a lot — if he understands what she means. He says that he does, without specifying what he exactly he "understands"; and indeed, he made entirely wrong conclusions: with Katia having so many partners before, he has to compete against them all, and would likely come up as boring and inexperienced. Fearing that unless they would stop him now, Phil would go all the way with his plan, and when it would inevitably fail miserably, would develop inferiority complex, Timur suggests to bribe, or, failing that, blackmail Katia into dumping Phil preemptively; Katia seemingly agrees. On another meeting, Phil tells Katia that yes, he's not the best in bed, but it's not all that matters; she should become closer to him — and make decision by herself, wether she wants him in her lifer or not. Despite initial awkwardness, she agrees. But Phil acts so cute and romantic, Katia now can't dump him even for the money offered by Polina. She even bribes Timur and Polina, so they wouldn't tell anything to Phil and ruin his — and her— only chance at happiness.

Alexei has rather attractive patient, who now demands "that attractive doctor" to visit her. Both Alexei and Gleb (who was presented during examination) now thinks that she's referring to them. When asked, turns out that the patient really is interested in Alexei, not Gleb, which surprises and offends Gleb. Then Alexei explains that this isn't one-time occurrence: Gleb starts losing his attractiveness to women, and they more and more often chooses Lyosha over him. Gleb plans to "prove" that he's still better with women than Alexei, and decides to prove it by attracting attention of one randomly chosen girl. Unfortunately, that attempt immediately goes wrong when she falls for Lyosha instead; Gleb is speechless. Gleb complains to Lyuba about his failures to impress young girls, as it makes him feel like old, ugly man — and Lyuba reveals that it was her who told everyone to not falling for his advices, since he would marry soon, and his bride is rather jealous. While Gleb feels relief from realising that it's merely Lyuba's fault, he's still angry at her, and asks not to do anything like this again: he may deal with his problems by himself. After dealing with Lyuba, Gleb tells Alexei that from now on, the girls would stop falling for him, as he's of not match for Gleb. Then one attractive girl asks Gleb... to introduce her to Lyosha, this time without any Lyuba's influence. Angry Gleb uses Lyuba's tactic, and lies that Lyuba is Alexei's jealous wife, and trying flirting with him would be dangerous.

Bykov calls Kupitman, saying just one word: "today". He refuses to answer Kisegach's questions, and takes a hammer with him when leaving for work. Kisegach then tries to ask Kupitman, thinking it's just them planning to get drunk, but finds that he's hiding something; under threat of being fired, he reveals... a fire extinguisher, the purpose of which he refuses to clarify. When Bykov returns from whatever they were doing,, he only drops a rubber glove and leaves. Kisegach tries to ask Lyuba, in hope that she knows why Bykov is acting so weirdly (it's not even the first time). Lyuba doesn't, but she remembers that Bykov and Kupitman locked themselves up in the archive for unknown purpose. When Kisegach goes there, she doesn't find them, but finds the preparations for some weird medical experiment, and a note pointing towards pathologist Violetta Karlovna; Violetta, when asked, reveals that Bykov took a corpse, with no explanation, and leaved. Kisegach traces Bykov to the attic, where he and Kupitman are planning "something" during storm, but the two leaves before she gets any explanation. She presses Bykov again later, and he reluctantly reveals that they're practicing capoeira, and that was a cover story: people would mock them if find out. She pretends to believe, but steals Bykov's key and checks the attic without Bykov, learning that apparently, experiment is real, and involves the corpse they took. Then corpse starts moving, making her panic and try to run, only to be stopped by Bykov; the "corpse" then removes blanket, revealing that it's actually Kupitman. All this mess was an elaborate prank on Anastasia, as a little vengeance for her pressing him to do something "scientific": when should he find time, if he's busy treating patients?

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Gleb, after dealing with Lyuba's Unwanted Assistance, tells Alexei that from now on, girls would stop falling for him since he isn't nearly a match for Gleb. Then one attractive girl asks Gleb... to introduce her to Lyosha, this time without any Lyuba's influence.
  • Blackmail: When bribing attempt fails, since Katia insists on genuinely liking Phil, Timur tries to simply blackmail her by threatening to reveal the fact that she's a prostitute to Phil. Polina decides not to check whether it worked and tries the bribe again, this time with specific sum, which Katia accepts.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Invoked, twice:
    • First time it gets used by Lyuba to "help" Gleb; she's told everyone that he is engaged with Sophia and she is very jealous, to the point that it would be dangerous to even try. This results in everyone going to Lyosha instead, to Gleb's irritation, since it makes him feel like he isn't attractive anymore.
    • When another girl shows affection to Lyosha without any Lyuba's influence, Gleb uses Lyuba's own tactic and lies that she is Alexei's jealous (and very dangerous) wife, and it would be unsafe to try anything with him. Lyuba looks threatening enough for this to be believable.
  • Description Cut: Gleb (still angry at Alexei allegedly being more successful with women than him) points to attractive brunette and tells Alexei that she would fall for him. Cut to said girl walking away with Lyosha.
  • Hooker with a Heart of Gold: After all Polina's and Timur's attempts to force Katia into dumping Phil (before he learns that she's a prostitute and it would break his heart), Katia informs them that not only she just genuinely fell in love with Phil, but she also thinks that he is one-of-a-kind great romantic guy and betraying him after he did so much for her would be a crime. She not only returns all the money Polina tried to bribe her with, but also gives even more to bribe her into remaining silent to not ruin her and Phil's happiness.
  • Hypocrite: Bykov has no time for science, he's too busy healing patients! But apparently he has enough time to do silly pranks on his boss, like this one.
  • Mad Scientist: Subverted. After long buildup, it turns out that there's no any "crazy medical experiment" that Bykov and Kupitman set up; it was just their prank on Kisegach. However, Bykov makes it clear that if he tries doing science for real, it indeed would be something like this.
  • Never My Fault: Polina refused to acknowledge that she played any part in Timur's plan (introducing Katia — a prostitute — to Phil), shifting all blame on Timur.
Polina: Holy shit, Phil dates a prostitute!
Timur: "Shit" part would happen when he learns that we are the pimps.
Polina: I'm not a part of this!
Timur: Are you? Officially, Katia is your friend, remember? And you never denied that.
  • Noodle Implement: Played for Laughs (and later revealed to be a part of larger prank); Bykov does many weird stuff, but never properly explains why, only makes it clear that it's needed for something. Him going on a work with a hammer, him cutting off his sleeve and stitching it back "for practice", him making "chemical experiment" in the kitchen, or bringing a jar with a toad which is "for someone else".
  • The Prankster: Entire plot about Bykov and Kupitman acting weirdly turns out to be the long buildup for their prank on Kisegach, where they pretendы to be Mad Scientists. He later reveals that he did this to pay up for her bothering him with requests to start "doing science".
  • Shout-Out: Entire Kisegach's plot is built upon references to Frankenstein (1931).
    • Bykov and Kupitman are planning some weird medical experiment on the attic, which requires a corpse, stitching practice and a storm.
    • Violetta Karlovna appears in person; observant viewers would remember her being the one who originally gifted Bykov his ficus... which he then named "Igor".
  • Unseen No More: Pathologist Violetta Karlovna was mentioned quite often throughout the series (like, she's the one who gifted Bykov Igor the ficus), but it's the first time she actually appears in person. For someone working in the morgue for many years, she is surprisingly cheerful and funny.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Turns out that the girls are avoiding Gleb not because he's no longer attractive, but because Lyuba warned everyone to not bother: he is (almost) married, and has extremely jealous girlfriend. Gleb is less than amused when he learns this, since this made him look like a fool before Lyosha (who now thinks that he is more successful with women than Gleb, and brags about this).
