Recap / The Interns S 10 E 4

Go To

Bykov considers celebrating the birthday of his old friend, Boar, to be so important tradition that he can't stay with his son Ilya when asked by Kisegach, especially since she didn't warn him beforehand. Knowing that he wouldn't do as she wants voluntarily, she steals his passport, leaving him no option but to do as she wants. When Bykov comes to the hospital, he announces that Sophia would be accepted by default, while the rest must compete for remaining two places by pleasing Bykov and earning dog medals; whoever wins the most, would pass themselves and would be able to choose a second partner from amongst the losers. Alternatively, someone may try to steal Bykov's passport from Kisegach and win a place that way; Maxim takes the risk, while others decides to compete.

Bykov proceed with his tests. First test is that of "intuition": where interns would go first — to the patients who needs it first, or the recently arriving ones? Alexei is first to realise that only things that matters is what Bykov would order them, and receives the first medal. Second medal gets earned by Zhanna, who correctly describes required first procedure before visiting the patient — cleaning hands... only to instantly lose it due to angering Bykov with stupid question. Vakhtang earns the third medal, being the first to notice the smell of acetone — and to guess that it may mean diabetes. The fourth medal gets (re)earned by Zhanna, who, when Bykov gives them a trick task (collect fecal matter), ends up being the only one to ask whose matter, before going anywhere. Meanwhile, Maxim tries to steal Bykov's passport from Kisegach's office by impersonating electrician... only to fail to find it. But it seems that she has a safe, which he never tried. He later tries again, this time asking Kisegach to open the safe, but she recognises him as one of interns, forcing him to run and accept defeat. Bykov awards him one medal for courage, but it wouldn't make up for him being so hopelessly behind. By the end of the day, both Zhanna and Vakhtang earns three medals each, while Alexei has only two. Maxim gifts him his only medal, on condition that if he wins, he would pick Max as the partner. As a tiebreaker, Alexei returns Bykov his passport, which he obtained by... annoying Kisegach by talking about his hometown till she snapped.

While the others were competing for medals, Sophia, who became an outcast due others believing that she exploited her connections to win a place unfairly, finds a new friend in Gleb, who had the similar problems due to being Kisegach's son. Sophia immediately jumps at an opportunity to learn more about the Big City... mainly, where she may find some interesting clubs. Sophia, who plans to go to a night club with Gleb, tells Kupitan that she would be late, if she would go home at all. He doesn't care — but Phil does, and reminds Kupitman about promise he gave to Sophia's parents, to take care of Sophia. But Kupitman only bothers to ask bare minimum, and when learns about Gleb, decides that nothing bad would happen. Kupitman thinks that he has nothing to hide and he can just finally drink... but then Phil reminds him that every time Gleb goes in a night club with a girl, it ends with them having sex. Gleb assures him that if this happens, it would be consensual, and Kupitman relaxes, as well as tells Phil to not say anything else, since he doesn't want to know. Phil then insists that Gleb changes girls more often than his socks, and that he would break Sophia's heart, but Kupitman, too stressed by this point, just yells at him that he doesn't care. Comes the night, and Phil hears some clearly erotic moans from the room, which means that Gleb already seduced Sophia. He calls Kupitman, who, despite (or maybe because) of being drunk, rushes to them, only to learn that it's some completely random girl. As Gleb reveals, Sophia was too wasted, and he called a taxi for her. The sole one who's happy with this situation is Phil, who now knows that deep inside, his boss does care about his niece.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Animal Motifs: Bykov has only dog medals to mark candidates' successes, so he considers that it would be funny if they would act like actual dogs where's possible: saying "paws" instead of "hands", sniffing patients (okay, this one actually makes sense in context, since Vakhtang recognises acetone smell as symptom), barking before answering, etc. He goes too far with it, however, as at one point he refuses correct answer from Zhanna due to her not barking, after which he immediately accepts that same answer from Vakhtang.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Sophia goes so overzealous with alcohol that Gleb instantly realises that yes, she really is Kupitman's niece. This was actually why he didn't try to seduce her afterwards: she was too wasted, so he had to call taxi to bring her home, and just picked some other girl in the club.
  • Inherently Funny Words: Maxim considers Alexei's home town's name, Torzhok, to sound very silly.
  • Internal Reveal: Sophia's relation to Kupitman stops being secret at all, with Bykov revealing it to the other candidates for internship.
  • It Amused Me: When ordered to collect fecal samples for testing, everyone rushes out... and only Zhanna stops to ask from whom. Bykov orders her not to warn the others, so they may see how long it would take them to realise their mistake.
  • Janitor Impersonation Infiltration: Maxim's plan how to steal Bykov's passport from Kisegach's office involves him impersonating electrician. She falls for it the first time, but when he comes again (now knowing where she keeps it), she recognises him, and he's forced to run.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Phil considered Kupitman rushing to Gleb the instant he heard him and Sophia "having sex" (in reality it was completely different girl) being the sign that he does care about Sophia after all, despite previously stating otherwise and acting like a jerk towards her.
  • Loophole Abuse: Since Bykov never forbade gifting medals to each other, Maxim gifts his sole medal to Alexei to make him even with the other two candidates (with Bykov's passport, which he also obtained, acting as a tiebreaker); as it was stated that the second winner is decided by the first one, Alexei repays by picking Maxim.
  • Overly Long Gag: Alexei spent a lot of time explaining to Kisegach how important his education is for Torzhok. A lot. And then we see the "round two", this time with explaining it to Maxim (chronologically it happened before the first case). He later almost starts a third round, but Maxim cuts him short.
  • Preemptive "Shut Up": Phil, at several points, tries to scare Kupitman by stating that something bad can happen to Sophia, for whom Kupitman accepted responsibility before Sophia's parents, each time adding more info to worry about. At one point Kupitman tells him to shut up right as he enters his office, before Phil even manages to say anything.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: When Bykov announces that Sophia is Kupitman's niece, and that she's now accepted by default, while the other four have to compete for two remaining places, Sophia immediately becomes an outcast; no one believes her that she didn't exploit her connections, and it was purely Bykov's initiative.
  • Single-Issue Wonk: Alexei is generally a nice guy, but whatever you do, do not allow him to start talking about his home town, Torzhok; he wouldn't shut up, at all, telling you everything you want to know, and much more. Maxim actually exploits this trait in order to press Kisegach into "bribing" Alexei (by giving him Bykov's passport which they tried to acquire), just so he would shut up and leave.
Zhanna: Your Lyosha is a freak; in one word, "Torzhok"!
  • Serious Business: Bykov considers celebrating birthday of his old biker friend, Boar, to be so important tradition that he can't stay with his son Ilya (especially since Kisegach failed to warn him beforehand in any meaningful way about her plans to leave).
  • There's No Place Like Home: Alexei's only reason to join internship is to receive education, so he may return in his home town Torzhok, and help its (almost non-existent) medicine. His obsession with it is also what really convinced Kisegach to give him Bykov's passport — because she was tired by him not shutting up about importance of being accepted by Bykov to help Torzhok. However, we later learn that he exaggerated real problems so his story would look more tragic... after which he proceeds to explain how it really works. Maxim cuts him short.
