Recap / The Handmaids Tale S 2 E 11 Holly

Go To

While marooned at the Mackenzie's mansion, June tries to find a way to escape. Fred and Serena search the house for Nick and June, but leave believing that both are in the wind. June's attempts to escape ultimately fail as she goes into labor and gives birth to a girl. Flashbacks detail June's experience giving birth with Hannah, and her relationship with her mother Holly, whom she names her newborn daughter after.

Tropes

  • Big Fancy House: June is isolated at the Mackenzie's enormous house.
  • Bottle Episode: Most of the episode takes place inside the house of the Mackenzies.
  • The Cameo: Oprah Winfrey is the voice of the "Free America" radio broadcast.
  • Chekhov's Gun: A literal case with the Mackenzie's shotgun, as June is forced to use it to attain medical attention when she goes into labour.
  • Cool Car: The Chevrolet Camaro in the garage.
  • Cutting the Knot: Subverted. Trying to ram the garage door with the Camaro does not work.
  • Dead Guy Junior: June names her baby Holly after her mother, who she believes is dead after seeing a photograph of her in the Colonies in "Baggage" in her early days in the Red Centre. The name becomes a Title Drop for this episode.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Fred clearly believed that Nick was loyal to him and is shocked when he believes that Nick and June have run off together. Serena chews him out for this by acknowledging that Nick is the father of June's baby and would not hesitate to be with June if the opportunity arose.
  • Didn't Think This Through: June clearly didn't plan her attempted escape very well, with all her back and forth from the house to the garage, first to get supplies, then to get a change of clothes. Not to mention that she was interrupted by the arrival of Fred and Serena. Finally, she didn't realize that since the house did not have power, the garage likely didn't have power as well, and her attempt to brute force her way out of the garage with the Camaro ultimately ends in failure.
  • Maternity Crisis: June going into labour alone at the Mackenzies' mansion is very bad timing and it basically has the consequence of ruining her escape attempt.
  • Never My Fault: Fred and Serena have a shouting match where they keep blaming one another for June's continuous attempts to escape.
  • Savage Wolves: A wolf lurks around the Mackenzies' home, clearly attracted by the scent of June's pregnancy.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Initially, June tries to run after the vehicle that took Nick, but realizes that she cannot get very far in the cold weather and decides to find another way to escape.
    • Despite her preparations with the Camaro, the doors to the garage will not open as the electric door opener will not work as the power has been shut off, and the door appears to be frozen in place.
    • Ramming the car against the garage door does NOT work like in the movies, and is also very dangerous for a pregnant woman.
    • Ultimately, what seals this for this trope is the fact that June is very close to delivering her baby, and lo and behold, her water breaks while she is still trying to get the car out of the garage. While she still could have theoretically made her escape after giving birth, there is no way to tell if her baby will survive without medical attention, and thus she is forced to use the shotgun to alert people to her location.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Both Fred and Serena are going through this with their frantic search for June. Fred lashes out at Serena for her treatment of June, while Serena counters Fred with his rape of June, to which Fred retorts that it was Serena's idea. Finally, Serena breaks down over the fact that all she ever wanted was to be a mother of a child.
  • What You Are in the Dark: June contemplates shooting both Fred and Serena while they're distracted with their argument, but ultimately cannot go through with it.
