Recap / The Goldbergs S 9 E 9 Tennis People

A Plot: Adam receives news that he has been accepted into New York University, but his excitement is soon diminished when he learns Brea has been accepted into a school far away, as Barry and Joanne convince him that the long distance will inevitably drive them apart.

B Plot: Mrs. Kremp offers to host Erica's bridal shower at an exclusive tennis club. Beverly is impressed and wants to apply for a membership, but learns that her current Sitcom Archnemesis, Jane Bales, is in charge.

  • Backhanded Apology: Beverly accidentally does this when apologizing to Mrs. Kremp for all the insults she's used on her over the years, as she repeats many of them verbatim before stating honestly that she thinks of her as a friend.
  • Book Ends: The B Plot starts with Mrs. Kremp offering to host Erica's bridal shower in her backyard (which Beverly adamantly refuses, as it smells (due to Beverly disposing of bacon fat there) and is filled with gophers (attracted by the bacon fat)), before suggesting her tennis club. At the end, to apologize for being overly dismissive and antagonistic, Beverly decides to host the shower in Mrs. Kremp's backyard after all. And at the shower, "Celebrate Good Times" from the beginning of the A Plot is playing on the radio.
  • Comic Role Play: Barry and Joanne act out how Adam and Brea's long-distance relationship will fail. In The Tag, they do another skit for Erica when Geoff has to be away for a few days.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Beverly is outraged when she learns that Mrs. Kremp didn't want her joining the tennis club, openly insulting her. However, when she retells the event for Murray, she realized that Mrs. Kremp not wanting her there because she's been too dismissive is actually valid.
  • Fun with Acronyms: John Calabasis' current scheme is offering enrollment at a school he's founding, and calling the Pembroke University of Technology and Sciences, otherwise known as PUTS (pronounced like "putz", AKA a stupid or worthless person).
  • Greed: After receiving a few early bridal shower gifts, Erica becomes obsessed with receiving more, to the point that she refers to the Guest List as a Gift List.
  • Groin Attack: Jane challenges Beverly to a tennis match to see if she's deserving of a membership, but Jane not only completely dominates the court, she serves the ball directly into Beverly's lady parts multiple times.
  • It's All About Me: As Adam had already struggled with getting into NYU after Brea was accepted there, his attempts to prevent a Long-Distance Relationship from occurring mainly involve trying to convince her to settle and not to attend an even better school.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: One of Jane Bales' tennis serves is while Beverly's back is turned, and another is when she's off the court, sitting on a bench, and too busy drinking from a water bottle to notice the ball coming at her head.
  • Letting the Air out of the Band: Near-literally in the opening, as Adam's announcement that he's going to NYU leads to the Jenkintown School Band playing "Celebrate Good Times" by Kool & the Gang...but it immediately dies down when Brea arrives and announces she's been accepted into Brown University, then picks back up when they decide to celebrate her accomplishment instead of Adam's.
  • Long-Distance Relationship: Adam's plot shows him get increasingly anxious when he and Brea might have to be in one of these. However, after his attempts to get her to avoid leaving start to veer into It's All About Me territory and she nearly breaks up with him, he relents and agrees to try to keep in touch.
  • Not Me This Time: When Beverly's denied membership at the tennis club, she immediately blames Jane Bales, but Jane claims she actually advocated for Bev's admittance in order to constantly outshine and intimidate her. Jane then immediately reveals it was Mrs. Kremp that cast the deciding vote, as she considers the club her one safe haven from Beverly and her dismissive, competitive attitude.
  • Phony Degree: John Calabasis is offering these, as shown when Adam looks for alternative places of education so he and Brea don't have to be so far apart.
  • Summon Backup Dancers: After Adam is accepted into NYU, the school's marching band and cheerleaders suddenly appear to celebrate with him. Principal Ball even mentions that he's waiving the required permits just for Adam. It's left unclear whether it was actually happening or just in Adam's head.
  • This Is Going to Be Huge: When worried about how their relationship is about to be long-distance, Brea and Adam compare themselves to couples they sincerely believe will last for life, but actually ended up having infamously troubled relationships: Madonna and Sean Penn, Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, and Mike Tyson and Robin Givens.
