Recap / The Goldbergs S 8 E 8 Bevys Big Murder Mystery Party

Go To

A Plot: Inspired by his obsession, Adam helps Beverly plan a murder mystery party for the family

B Plot: Erica, tasked with declaring her major, bumps up against Barry's cockiness as she considers going the pre-med route.

  • Actually Pretty Funny: After the minor incidents during Bev's party are resolved, the guests admit they actually had a fun time despite the feeling of danger.
  • Call-Back: After Erica gets upset at Barry for constantly bragging that he'll be a doctor, and Barry denying it, there's a quick series of clips of Barry calling himself "doctor" in past episodes.
  • Compartment Shot: As Erica and Barry open the cooler with the severed foot inside, there is a shot from inside the cooler. (The foot is never seen.)
  • Deliberately Monochrome: When Adam recaps the events of the night, the flashback scenes are desaturated.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: The B Plot starts with Erica forced to pick a major, and not actually knowing what path she currently wants to take in life, ultimately going for pre-med just to spite Barry. After she defends Barry to the teacher after the foot incident, Barry encourages her to go into law.
  • Discretion Shot: The foot that Erica and Barry are supposed to operate on is never shown.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: The person that slipped Bill a food he's allergic to and bedazzled Mrs. Kremp's jacket, as revealed by Adam before the guests leave, is the least likely suspect: Murray. He first felt insulted by the guests saying he looked shabby, intentionally ruining the mystery as revenge, and then slipped Bill a crab cake (which he knew Bill would survive due to a past incident involving one) and bedazzled the jacket to save Beverly's night. Adam figured it out after Murray left to have a shower in the middle of the party, to clean off both bedazzle beads and the sweat from being far more active than he usually is.
  • I'll Never Tell You What I'm Telling You!: Before the "murder" in the murder mystery party even happens, Murray gets bored and asks if Bill's stabbed him yet, where everyone can hear him. When Beverly and Adam reprimand him for spoiling part of the mystery, he says that at least they don't know it happens in the basement with an ice skate, still where everyone can hear him. This was intentional, since the guests mocked him and he wanted to ruin their fun.
  • Irrational Hatred: Mr. Glascott is an animal lover, but has no problem bringing crab cakes to the party because he believes crustaceans are soulless abominations and that there is no crab heaven.
  • Jenny's Number: The Tag has Mr. Glascott asking Adam when his parents or their friends are going to invite him to more fun parties. Adam gives him this number to stop the pestering, saying it's Mrs. Kremp's, though Glascott immediately recognizes it from the song.
  • Lights Off, Somebody Dies: The lights go out in the middle of the dinner, and when they come back on, Bill has eaten some crab and is having an allergic reaction.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: Beverly invites all of her friends and their husbands to the party...and also John Glascott, who she ran into at the grocery store.
  • Mystery Episode: At first, the episode features a mystery dinner party game which gets ruined by the "victim's" impatience. Then it turns into a real mystery concerning who slipped Bill a crab cake and bedazzled Ginny Kremp's coat.
  • Not Me This Time: After Murray (who's playing the role of the corpse) gets impatient and spoils the entire mystery, the party guests become victims to minor incidents before they can depart, such as Ginny Kremp's coat being bedazzled with "U R NEXT". The guests end up blaming Beverly, since she set up the mystery party and has a well-known habit of going to extremes, but this turns out to be completely unplanned by her.
  • Plot Allergy: Bill is allergic to shellfish, which becomes relevant when he has a reaction to a stuffed mushroom with some of Glascott's crab cake in it, leading to a real mystery after Murray ruined the original mystery dinner.
  • A Rare Sentence:
Bill: We're here for the murder. (chuckles) That's something people don't usually say.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Beverly gives Murray one for completely ruining the party, both by spoiling the original mystery, and then going off to take a shower instead of helping to fix his mistake. However, it later turns out that he's actually been working to fix his mistake all night long.
    • Additionally, Barry gives one to Erica after they're kicked out of a pre-med class, saying that it's one thing to be competitive and another to sabotage his dreams.
  • Shout-Out: To Clue, which Adam and Beverly watch, and inspires Beverly to host a mystery party. Jonathan Lynn, the film's director, is given an additional shout-out at the end, with a note that he mentored the real-life Adam Goldberg.
  • Swapped Roles: Erica becomes frustrated when she receives a C in the pre-med class she attends, while Barry is the best student in class, as she's usually smarter than him.
  • Taking the Heat: After a Freak Out seeing a severed foot in an anatomy class and a fight with Barry leads to them both being kicked out, Erica apologies and takes on the entirety of the blame while also presenting evidence that Barry deserves to stay in class. Barry is impressed, and suggests that she should apply her negotiation skills to become a lawyer.
