Recap / The Goldbergs S 3 E 7 Lucky

Go To

A Plot: The new family dog, Lucky, plays favorites.

B Plot: Erica and Lainey don't invite Beverly to their sleepover, causing disharmony in the mother-daughter relationship.

  • Alpha and Beta Wolves: When the new dog starts bonding with Murray instead of Barry, Adam convinces the latter it's because of this, causing Barry to try (and fail) to prove his superiority in order to become the new Alpha.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: From just outside of the living room, Murray hears Barry privately confess to the dog that he'll accept being without a sidekick, and Murray needs a furry friend more.
  • I Lied: Barry had been told by his dad for his entire life that they can't get a dog because he is deathly allergic to them, which unravels at the episode's start when he accidentally falls into a display case at the pet store. When he confronts Murray about it, Murray admits he lied just to avoid having to get a family pet.
  • Irony: Murray, who was against having a dog to the point of lying to his son that any contact whatsoever would kill him, ends up loving the dog the most when they get one.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Barry tries renaming the new family pet Lucky to "Traitor" for favoring Murray over him, but gets over it when he realizes how happy Murray is with the dog.
  • One Phone Call: When Erica and Lainey get in trouble for trying to buy scalped concert tickets from an undercover cop, Erica gets one of these, and chooses to use it to ask Pops for help instead of her mom. When Pops gets arrested for driving without a licence while coming to rescue them, he calls for Beverly.
  • Say It: When Erica and Lainey end up in a holding cell, Beverly refuses to spring them until Erica admits to her (and the nearby cop) that she needs Bev in her life.
  • Spy Cam: Adam and his friends attempt to spy on Erica's sleepover to learn more about girls by hiding a camera in their room. Bev catches them, but then spies on the girls herself, which gets discovered by Erica and motivates her to try and cut her mom out of her life entirely.
  • Through His Stomach: It turns out that the new dog mainly favors Murray over Barry because Murray keeps spilling crumbs and scraps. Once this is revealed, all it takes is Barry sharing some food for the dog to love him too.
