Recap / The Goldbergs S 10 E 22 Bev To The Future

Go To

A Plot: Adam escorts Beverly to her high school reunion, and then has to make sure she doesn't end up with a man that'll cause trouble, her first boyfriend George Myerson (played by Rob Corddry).

B Plot: Barry and Joanne want to prove to everyone how serious their relationship is.

  • Actor Allusion: The A Plot is a Whole-Plot Reference to Back to the Future, a movie about time travel. One of Rob Corddry's most notable roles is Lou from Hot Tub Time Machine, a movie about time travelling to the '80s (the decade in which The Goldbergs is set).
  • And the Adventure Continues: The episode ends with Adam and Carmen driving down the street, Adam stating that he's not sure what's going to happen to them next, but he's eager to find out.
  • Baby's First Words: Muriel says her first word, "Bubbie" (which means "grandma"), during her first birthday party. The importance of her first word makes Barry and Joanne feel selfish and wait before stealing the spotlight with news of their Elopement, though Beverly finds out and yells at Barry right as Adam and Carmen leave the party.
  • Back for the Finale: Scenes of the dead-in-universe Pops and Murray play during the ending montage celebrating the Series Finale, with the final shot of The Tag being a clip of Pops saying "I'm gonna miss you guys!"
  • Bookends: The last episode ends just like the first episode does, with a shot of a car going down the street, only this time at night.
  • Call-Back: Pop-Pop got Marvin's old DeLorean to repay a debt and gives it to Adam to catch up to George after Adam chased him away and then realized how badly he hurt Beverly by doing so.
  • Dreadful Musician: Adam tries to play guitar during the high school reunion just like Marty McFly did in Back to the Future. Turns out Adam can't play a lick to save his life.
  • Elopement: Barry and Joanne end up doing this right before Muriel's first birthday in order to prove to everyone that doubted them how serious their relationship is.
  • Inherently Funny Words: One of the reasons why Barry and Joanne still aren't taken seriously by anyone is that they both burst out laughing whenever Matt Bradley talks about his grandmother's angina.
  • New Old Flame: Adam had never heard of George Myerson before and assumed that Murray was Beverly's first and only love. It turns out that Murray was Beverly's college boyfriend and she had not only dated George Myerson in high school, they were Best Couple in the yearbook. This gives Adam anxiety and leads to him trying to break them up when they reunite as, while he never reacted poorly to her potentially finding a Second Love in Mr. Perrot, he doesn't want to think of Murray as her Second Love in comparison to George.
  • Series Finale: This is the final episode of the final season of The Goldbergs, and ends with a dedication to "a decade of Goldbergs".
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The A Plot is based on Back to the Future, with Adam trying to make sure his mother doesn't hook up with the wrong man at a school dance, but in the present day rather than going back in time. The episode even ends with Adam and Carmen leaving Muriel's birthday party in a DeLorean.
