A Plot: Adam receives a letter from NYU that changes all of his plans.

B Plot: Barry learns that the JTP have friends from outside of the JTP.

  • Betrayal by Inaction: The B Plot starts with the JTP minus Matt Bradley attending an Eagles game and, because Matt was supposed to bring the E's for their "EAGLES" sign, failing to get recognized as superfans in favor of another group...that does include Matt Bradley, who forgot about the sign and just wanted to hang out with his other friends that day. When Barry confronts Matt about it afterwards, he learns that everyone but himself (and Geoff, who wants to spend more time with Erica) has separate groups of friends he didn't know about.
  • Book Ends: The B Plot starts with the JTP failing to get on the big screen at a sports stadium showcasing superfans because Matt wasn't there and their EAGLES sign was incomplete. The final shot before The Tag is the whole JTP and their complete sign appearing on the big screen at the next game.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Barry's main concern is that the members of the JTP like hanging out with other people more than they do himself and, as he's the leader of the JTP, this will end up splitting them all apart. In the end, they reassure Barry that they're not just friends, they're family, and they don't ever plan on splitting up the JTP.
  • Broke the Rating Scale: One of Adam's ex-girlfriends states that, on a scale of 0 to 10 of how beneficial Beverly was to their relationship, she ranks a -7.
  • The Bus Came Back: Jackie Geary, who was last seen at Barry's graduation in the season 6 finale "Breakin'", appears among the rest of Adam's ex-girlfriemds whom Beverly reaches out to.
  • Call-Back: The episode begins by going over all of Adam's previous girlfriends before getting to his current relationship with Carmen. Midway through the episode, Beverly then reaches out to all of these women to learn if she's really as overbearing, difficult, controlling, and manipulative as everyone claims she is...and when they all say that she is, she blames Adam's terrible taste in women before deciding they might have a point.
  • Career Versus Man: The A Plot starts with Adam getting a letter about NYU housing, leading him to have to decide between going to University or continuing his relationship with Carmen. Bev tries to convince him that he can take Carmen to New York with him and doesn't have to choose, as she's worried that New York women will corrupt Adam, but Carmen's unwilling to completely uproot her life just for Adam. In the end, after Adam apologizes for following his mother's advice, Carmen states she's glad that he's in her life and she'll figure out whether she's willing to relocate to NY closer to when it's actually time for Adam to leave for university.
  • Comically Missing the Point: After Barry breaks up with the JTP and is afraid that he'll never make new friends, Joanne convinces him that he has friends in Ginsey, Bill and Mr. Glascott. Unfortunately, Barry's takeaway is that he can take those friends and rub them in the JTP's faces, which fails in part because Ginsey and Bill can't stand each other.
  • Failure Montage: Barry's first reaction to learning everyone but him has friends outside of the JTP is to make new friends and gloat about it to the JTP, but he's immediately shown striking out at every opportunity, even scaring away some Jehovah's Witnesses that knock on his door.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Beverly thinks that it's perfectly reasonable to contact all of Adam's ex-girlfriends and interrogate them about how Beverly influenced their relationships in order to prove that she's not as meddlesome as people say she is, and is surprised to learn she is.
  • Imagine Spot: The episode begins with Adam having a "sleepover" at Carmen's, and then imagining he's the star of his own dance sequence downtown. It unfortunately ends with Beverly interrupting to state he's growing up so fast and trying to cuddle her shmoo.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Barry eventually realizes that he does have non-JTP friends: fellow sports fan Bill Lewis, emotional support Mrs. Kremp, and family companion Mr. Glascott. Unfortunately, Bill and Ginsey can't stand each other, and Mr. Glascott has sourdough that takes priority.
  • My Beloved Smother: When Beverly's suggestion to Adam to take Carmen with him to New York blows up in his face, Adam, Mr. Glascott, and Mrs. Kremp say that Beverly tends to interfere in Adam's love life far too often. She admits that she's indeed at fault after interrogating Adam's past girlfriends, but Erica states that Adam's also at fault for still relying on her as much as he does instead of growing up and making his own decisions when it comes to important matters like his relationships.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: The first present-day scene of the episode is Adam and Carmen waking up in the same bed, which Adam's narration refers to as a "sleepover".
  • Signs of Disrepair: The JTP go to an Eagles game with signs that are supposed to spell "EAGLES", but since Matt Bradley, who was supposed to bring the Es, chose to go with other people, the sign reads "GALS" instead.
  • Title Drop: "Push It" by Salt-N-Pepa is playing during Adam's Imagine Spot at the beginning, though he's only heard the song on the radio and doesn't accurately picture the right people singing it.
