Recap / The Goldbergs S 10 E 1 If You Build It

Go To

For various reasons, all of the Goldbergs are now living under Beverly's roof, including Pop-Pop after he accidentally burned down his apartment...but excluding Murray, who suddenly passed away. Pregnant Erica enlists Beverly's help in clearing things out for her and Geoff's upcoming baby, and Adam and Barry are forced to share a bedroom to make room for the nursery.

  • Dramatically Missing the Point: After sharing how he "Field of Dreams-ed" Barry to the JTP, they're the ones to inform Adam (who is usually the most knowledgeable about films, but dismissed this one due to its focus on sports) that the movie was about the protagonist connecting with his deceased father. Adam, who just wanted Barry out of his hair, feels horrible that he's convinced his brother that their own deceased father was trying to reach out to him.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: This is the JTP's reaction to Adam bragging about how he "out-Barry'd Barry" by "Field of Dreams-ing" him, since Adam wasn't paying attention to the film's actual themes due to its focus on sports and the fact that Barry enjoyed it. They also call Adam out for trying to "fix" his mistake by asking one of them to dress up as Murray and play catch with Barry.
  • Empty Chair Memorial: As Adam's opening narration gets to how Murray died during the Time Skip, the camera focuses on his empty easy chair.
  • Excessive Mourning: While making room for a nursery, it turns out that Beverly has been saving a closet full of Murray's old stuff months after his passing, including ten copies of one of his shirts. When convincing her to let go of the past leads to her also getting rid of Murray's "Mr. Chair", Erica ends up breaking into tears herself, and the two girls end up on a grand quest to recover the chair; it turns out Pop-Pop secretly brought it back and put it in the nursery.
  • Fast-Forward Gag: The opening scene shows the chaos at the Goldberg household after the Time Skip by having all the characters zip around at double speed, complete with sped-up voices.
  • Killed Offscreen: Like Pops in the previous season, we're never actually shown Murray's death or funeral; Adam just takes a moment to solemnly talk about it at the start of the episode while recapping what's happened since his high school graduation.
  • Manchild: Within moments of Adam and Barry sharing a bedroom, Barry gives Adam a wedgie and throws him onto the bed to sit on his face, just like how he bullied Adam when they were both younger.
  • Person as Verb: Adam repeatedly uses the phrase "Field of Dreams-ed" to describe his act of tricking Barry into believing a higher power wanted him to do something.
  • Right Behind Me: After the JTP inform Adam how he's Dramatically Missing the Point of Field of Dreams, Adam tries to convince one of them to dress up as Murray and help trick Barry into believing that his father really did come back to play catch with him...not noticing that Barry is nearby and overhearing everything.
  • The Scapegoat: After Erica has an emotional breakdown when she sees "Mr. Chair" is gone that makes Beverly instantly regret her decision, they both decide to blame Geoff, who has been trying to help his wife with her "nesting" but was repeatedly ignored, and wasn't involved in this decision at all.
  • Shout-Out:
    • After Barry keeps him up at night by watching Field of Dreams in their shared room, Adam decides to use a baby monitor that Geoff lets him borrow to, quote, "Field of Dreams" Barry, tricking him into believing that some higher power has told him "If you build it, he will come" in order to keep Barry too distracted to torment Adam.
    • In The Tag, while Pop-Pop tries to explain to Beverly why Barry tore up the backyard in an attempt to convert it into a wiffleball field, he misremembers what Adam told him and states that Barry was inspired by "Nightmare on Football Street".
  • Something We Forgot: Midway through the episode, while desperately in search of "Mr. Chair", Beverly tells Lucky the dog to track Murray's scent; the dog immediately runs away, and Erica remarks that now they've lost a dog in addition to a chair. In The Tag, while seeing how Barry destroyed the backyard by trying to turn it into a wiffleball field, she asks what happened to the doghouse...and then asks what happened to Lucky.
  • Time Skip: The episode takes place several months after Adam's graduation in the previous season finale, and a lot of things have changed since then. Erica is now heavily pregnant, and she and Geoff have moved in so Beverly can help raise the baby; Adam has postponed going to NYU to help out; Barry has moved in because he forgot to apply for housing at his medical university, as has Pop-Pop after he burned his apartment down; and more significantly, Murray has died.
