Go To

Original air date: 2/26/2022

Production code: 113a

Scratch is accused of stealing the passion-fruit crumb-cake Mr. McGee made for his wedding anniversary, but he insists he's innocent, and Molly vows to investigate the truth.

Tropes:

  • Big "WHY?!": Pete lets out one of these when he sees the cake is gone.
  • Blatant Lies: Darryl's alibi is that he was busy doing his homework, and Molly immediately calls him out on his flimsy lie. Even Darryl's lawyer won't support that alibi.
  • Bottle Episode: The entire episode is set at the McGee house.
  • Breaking Old Trends: This is the first episode to not feature a song.
  • Call-Back: Back in "The Curse", Molly offered Scratch a granola bar, and he said “as long as it’s not carob” before eating it. Turns out Scratch has a carob allergy.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Geoff thought the cake was for his birthday in spite of it not being his birthday and the cake having Sharon's name on it. He thought "s-h-a-r-o-n" was a misspelling of his name.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Scratch threatens to make the guilty party hand-wash Darryl's filthy gym socks, and when it looks like Scratch is guilty after all, Pete threatens to make Scratch do it.
  • Courtroom Episode: Molly arranges a mock trial to try and prove Scratch is innocent of cake theft.
  • Dramatic Drop: As Pete discovers the cake is gone, he drops the cake toppers, and they shatter on the ground in slow motion.
  • Everybody Did It: It turns out Sharon can't stand carob and was tempted to throw out the cake but put it back, Darryl stole the dome from the cake plate to try and catch his new pet tarantula, Pete ruined his first attempt at the cake because he was working with a new recipe, and the one who actually ate the cake was Scratch's fellow ghost Geoff.
  • Face Palm: Darryl's lawyer does this.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: Molly's attempt at dramatically shouting "Justice is what's going on!" is interrupted by her falling off a table, then realizing she's facing the wrong way after taking off the blindfold she was wearing as Lady Justice.
  • Funny Background Event: When Molly asks Darryl if he caught the spider, you can see it crawling on the ceiling behind her as Darryl lies that he did.
  • Hesitation Equals Dishonesty: When asked if he caught his spider, Darryl hesitates before lying that he did.
  • Lost Food Grievance: Molly and her father treat the cake-theft like a heinous crime.
  • Mockumentary: The presentation for the episode riffs on "true crime" documentary series.
  • Not Me This Time: Scratch insists that even though he has a habit of sneaking food, he wasn't the one who ate Pete and Sharon's anniversary cake.
  • Overly Long Gag: Molly and Scratch accompany their Molly McGee Guarantee with a long and complicated Secret Handshake.
  • Plot Allergy: Molly is only able to prove Scratch's innocence by revealing he has a carob allergy.
  • Pinky Swear: Molly describes a "Molly McGee Guarantee" as "a pinky promise dipped in a blood oath wrapped in the American Constitution!"
  • Stock "Yuck!": Sharon can't stand carob, calling it a liar for pretending to be chocolate. As for Scratch, he's allergic to it.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: Scratch's carob allergy causes him to swell so much he fills out the whole house.
  • Unit Confusion: Pete ruined the first cake because the recipe was British and used Celsius, and he mistranslated to Fahrenheit.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: It turns out Geoff ate the cake, setting off the whole series of events.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: The entire McGee family is unnerved when they learn about Darryl's tarantula and that it's possibly on the loose, but Molly is especially skittish and worriedly asks if he caught it.
