Recap / The Flash 2014 S 8 E 13 Death Falls

Go To

With Deathstorm preparing to make Caitlin his bride, Frost steps up to protect her sister. Meanwhile, the rest of the team fight for their lives against the evil entity's machinations.

Tropes:

  • Badass Boast: An impressive, evil version.
Deathstorm: I was born a long time ago— before Maltus, before the stars, during that lonely, blackest of nights. I was there when the first gas cloud sank and collapsed. I was there when the first beings drew their final, hissing breaths. I am decline. I am entropy. I am the master of death and all of its inhabitants.
  • Beam-O-War: Hellfrost and Deathstorm engage in one.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Frost powers up as Hellfrost just in time to save the rest of her friends from nearly being killed by Deathstorm, with her now finally having a way to fight back against him.
  • Big "NO!": Deathstorm, when Hellfrost destroys him.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Frost dies, but not before defeating Deathstorm.
  • Breaking Speech: Deathstorm's illusions in the forms of Nora Allen, Eddie Thawne, Esperanza and Quincy P. Runk dishes out several of them towards his respective victims.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Eddie Thawne, though only through one of Deathstorm's illusions.
    • Mark returns.
  • Call-Back:
    • Deathstorm phantoms show up masquerading as Eddie Thawne and Nora Allen.
    • Deathstorm shows Barry a montage of others he's lost: Henry, Nora West-Allen, and HR.
    • Chryer, Joe's partner from the very beginning of the show, is mentioned.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: "Hellfrost", Frost's new form has black hair.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Mark has one when cheering up Frost, deducing that the M.A.C. worked correctly, the only thing holding back Frost being her mental blocks.
  • Face Your Fears: Team Flash is once more faced with the illusions of dead loved ones.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Mark is somehow completely oblivious to the Flash suit standing in the corner of the room until Frost points it out to him.
  • Flashback: The deaths of several people close to Barry and his team are shown throughout the episode.
  • The Hero Dies: Frost dies shortly after destroying Deathstorm.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: At the end of the previous episode Barry warned Frost that empowering herself with the M.A.C. to become an anti-Deathstorm was among the most dangerous things they had ever attempted as a team, and it was an enormous risk, but one she was still willing to take. Sure enough, while she succeeds, she ends up paying with her life.
  • Internal Reveal: Mark learns that Barry is the Flash.
  • Let Me Get This Straight...: Frost towards Deathstorm, asking him if his entire plan is really making Caitlin his unwilling bride because he is lonely.
  • Lured into a Trap: Hellfrost disguises herself as Caitlin, luring Deathstorm into a trap.
  • Mind Rape: What Deathstorm does to most of Team Flash before nearly killing them.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome:
    • When Eddie's illusions asks Sue why she isn't feeling any grief, she reveals that she did manage to press the panic button on her phone. Joe busts in with a gun, trying to save Iris and Sue... but then he too gets trapped in an illusion of grief.
    • When Frost tries to activate her new powers upon exiting from the M.A.C. it doesn't amount to much.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Deathstorm gives one to Frost, calling her a fake person since her grief is merely a copy of Caitlin’s.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: Eddie's illusion emphasizes how much Eddie's sacrifice was this, as Reverse-Flash has kept coming back since.
  • Stepford Smiler: The illusion of Eddie has a very eery smile, which he doesn't stop wearing even when threatening Iris and Sue.
  • Time Abyss: Deathstorm claims to be as old as creation itself.
  • Tonight, Someone Dies: A few weeks prior to the episode's airing it was stated by Word of God that a member of Team Flash would be killed off in this episode. In the end, it ended up being Frost.
  • Worst Aid: Frost flatlines and Caitlin tries to bring her back with defibrillator paddles. In reality, Frost went into Asystole, which is a NON-shockable rhythym and thus would not have benefited from the shocks at all. Caitlin, as a doctor, should have known this and proceeded with CPR and medication to try to start her heart instead.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Twice. First, after Hellfrost walks away from the fight with Deathstorm victoriously, but then collapses. Then when she reverts back into her normal Frost form, shortly opens up her eyes, but then still expires right in front of Barry and Caitlin.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Mark gives Frost a pep talk when she ponders on whether Deathstorm might've been right about her being unable to feel grief.
