Ah, what better way to end things off than with someone new and exciting.
After a botched cookie run, Cuphead and Mugman run into a streetwise Ms. Chalice and learn how to be more charming to get free stuff.

Tropes

  • Bears Are Bad News: The bear security guard the boys meet comes pretty close to beating with a nightstick.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Without his glasses, Kettle can't distinguish between the boys and some crudely made dummies.
  • Brick Joke: The episode starts with the brothers trying to get a jar full of cookies. By the end, Ms. Chalice helps them sneak into a factory that makes cookies.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Ms. Chalice's uncanny ability to charm others. She agrees to teach the brothers how to do the same, but it doesn't work in the end.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode, and thus the first season, ends with the cups in jail, followed by a To Be Continued title card.
  • Comically Missing the Point: The optician clerk criticizes the boys for failing to steal cookies from a sleeping old man, more than them stepping on Elder Kettle's glasses.
  • Downer Ending: The episode ends with Cuphead and Mugman imprisoned.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Ms. Chalice is introduced charming the dour shop clerk with a catchy song and dance routine, which she exploits to walk out with stolen sunglasses. She may seem sweet and peppy, but Ms. Chalice doesn't play by the rules.
  • The Name Is Bond, James Bond: Ms. Chalice introduces herself to the cups in this manner.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: While she had no malicious undertones in getting the boys into the cookie factory, Ms. Chalice inadvertently gets the Cup Bros caught because she unwittingly activated the cookie factory's silent alarm.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Ms. Chalice abandons Cuphead and Mugman to their fate after she fails to wake them up before there is time to escape. Although, it's more of reluctance than a genuine desire to betray them.
Ms. Chalice: "Sorry, boys. I like ya, but not enough to tango with the cops. So long fellas."
  • Sleeping Dummy: Cuphead and Mugman leave poorly constructed dummies on the sofa to fool Elder Kettle. Fortunately, Elder Kettle doesn't have his glasses.
  • Tempting Cookie Jar: The episode begins with Cuphead trying to get the cookie jar on a top shelf and accidentally stepping on Elder Kettle's glasses. While going to get them fixed before he wakes up, they run into Ms. Chalice, who helps them break into a cookie factory, but winds up getting them arrested by mistake.
  • Traitor Shot: A Played With case. When Chalice decides to take Cuphead and Mugman under her wing, she makes a Slasher Smile-like expression when they couldn't see her face. However, she later helps them when they were in trouble with a guard, instead of just leaving them. However, when some cops arrive to arrest them, she eventually (if very reluctantly) abandons them.
  • Wham Shot: Ms. Chalice turns into a ghost as she escapes the cookie factory. An indication that even in the show's universe, she's still the Legendary Chalice.
  • Wheel of Feet: Ms. Chalice's feet are sometimes animated this way.
  • Wink "Ding!": Every time Ms. Chalice winks at someone as part of her charming routine, a ding sound plays and a little star shoots out of her eye. In the song that she sings to teach the boys how to charm others, she mentions not to forget "the little gleam in your eye" as she winks again with the same fanfare.
