This months-long break has gone on long enough. It's time to bust out of this joint and continue the show!
Cuphead and Mugman find themselves in Inkwell Penitentiary after the events of In Charm's Way. Now they have to find a way out and return home before Elder Kettle finds out they are missing.

Tropes

  • Angry Guard Dog: Every time Cuphead and Mugman try to escape, they are chased by the prison guard dogs. On the final escape attempt, Miss Cyclops scares away the dogs with a ferocious roar.
  • Answer Cut: Cuphead imagines that Elder Kettle has surely found his glasses by now. Cut to Elder Kettle still stumbling around looking for his glasses, the whole house a mess from blindly stumbling around.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Mugman's good deeds while in prison earns him the respect of the inmates. When his own attempt to break himself and Cuphead out of prison fails, Miss Cyclops helps them because he cleaned her blankie.
  • Bedsheet Ladder: Used in the boys' first escape attempt.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: After being caught after each escape attempt, the warden sentences Cuphead and Mugman to a day of breaking rocks, then a day in the box, and then a day of breaking rocks in the box.
  • The Dreaded: Miss Cyclops is the biggest, most potentially dangerous inmate in the prison, so everyone is afraid of her.
  • Failure Montage: In a montage of sorts, Cuphead and Mugman fail miserably through numerous attempts to escape from prison and are punished every time for it.
  • Great Escape: The boys are stuck in prison and come up with numerous ways of escaping.
  • Harmless Electrocution: Cuphead's solo escape plan lands him in the electric chair. Thanks to Toon Physics, the worst he gets out of it is an Ash Face and some residual shocks.
  • Hope Spot: Cuphead's solo breakout seems to have worked. Unfortunately, it just leads him to a room with an electric chair. And the Bee Cop operating it just instantly puts him in it.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Mugman knows Cuphead enough to be stubborn and is fine with him escaping on his own. When Mugsy finds out he has finally given up, he sets up his own escape plan so they can leave together.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: How the brothers handle their jail time: Cuphead (red nose) wants to find an elaborate way to escape, while Mugman (blue nose) decides to play out his sentence in hopes of leaving early with good behavior.
  • Rule of Three: Cuphead and Mugman nearly break out of prison, get caught, and then are chased down by the guard dogs. And this happens thrice before Mugman finally calls it quits.
  • You Are Grounded!: Whether he knew about the boys getting arrested, or accidentally breaking his glasses, Elder Kettle grounds them when they finally come home. However, given that they just broke out of actual prison, they don't mind that much.
