Recap / The Croods: Family Tree S3E1 "The Thunder Misters"

Go To

As the Thunder Sisters celebrate their latest victory, Grug, Phil and Guy feel left out and want to join the them.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Awesome, but Impractical: All of Phil's solutions in the trials employ him using his inventing skills to create solutions that require time and resources he doesn't have.
  • Distaff Counterpart: The titular "Thunder Misters" group was meant to be this for the Thunder Sisters when they fail to join as part of a ploy to win their way in.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Grug and Phil constantly blame each other for not following their lead, failing every test because they are incapable of working together. Even when Guy tells them to their faces that their ideas contradict the whole point, they ignore him.
  • Engineered Heroics: After failing the trials, Phil creates a false ramiconda so that they could swoop in and "save" the Thunder Sisters. Not only does the fake monster not convince the Thunder Sisters, it ends up attracting a real ramiconda.
  • Impossibly Mundane Explanation: One of the tests the guys are put through is to help transport Gran and Ugga (pretending to be injured), Guy suggest that they carrying them across a tree bridge. Both Grug and Phil dismiss the idea as "too easy," the former wanting to throw them while Phil wants to make an overly complicated pulley-system.
  • Taught by Experience: Guy's hat in the episode. He consistently refers to his own personal experience surviving alone and demonstrates it with various Simple, yet Awesome tricks he learned.
  • The Team Wannabe: Grug, Phil and Guy all want to join the Thunder Sisters. Unfortunately, they aren't team-players.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: After Grug and Phil finally get over themselves and work together, they and Guy realize that they don't like each other enough to do it on a regular basis.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: The whole point of the various trials to enter the Thunder Sisters is to encourage teamwork and cooperation, but the men are all too wrapped up in themselves to try. Grug thinks that every problem can be solved with brute strength, Phil tries using his Awesome, but Impractical inventing skills to single-handedly solve the problem and Guy doesn't do any better because Grug and Phil refuse to cooperate with him. By the end, they all agree that even though they are effective as a team, doing so just isn't worth it.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: In typical Grug fashion, all of his solutions for the trials include finding the closest thing and trying to punch it into submission.
