Recap / The Cleveland Show S 2 E 2 Cleveland Live

Go To

The Cleveland Show opens its second season with the first-ever live performance of an animated sitcom. In it, Cleveland and Donna's first anniversary is interrupted, when Robert barges into their house to "lay low", while the cops are out chasing him. Meanwhile, Tim is heartbroken when Arianna cheats on him. Meanwhile, Roberta takes the debate team to regionals. (Cut for Time).

Tropes:

  • Abandoned Catchphrase: Rallo introduces "Well, here I is." as his new catchphrase for season two, but instantly abandons it, once Junior makes his new catchphrase "Teddy bear picnic!" note  and Rallo realizes how dumb catchphrases are.
  • Actor Allusion: Julia Roberts's role as Robert's parole officer, "Julia Robertson", awkwardly works in the names of the films she starred in.
Julia Robertson: I may look like a pretty woman, but I'm a steel magnolia, and I eat, pray, love being a parole officer, even when I have to miss my best friend's wedding to track down a runaway bride. I was also in The Pelican Brief.
  • Anachronic Order: Despite this clearly being the intended season premiere, it was aired as the second episode of the season.
    • Strangely enough, a girl was wearing a shirt that said "I Be-Cleve", making a reference to the episode that aired before this, but was produced after this.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Between Robert and Arianna.
  • Call-Back: One of the fans of The Cleveland Show was wearing a shirt that said "I Be-Cleve", making a callback to the episode "Harder, Better, Faster, Browner".
  • The Cameo: Peter and Lois from Family Guy briefly appear in the audience.
  • Cosmic Deadline: Due to Roberta hijacking the episode to deliver her big speech meant for the cut debate team subplot, Cleveland is forced to quickly explain how Tim's and Robert's subplots were meant to end before he and Donna finally have their anniversary dinner with only a minute left of airtime.
  • The Heckler: A few people shout out random, disruptive comments to the cast, while they're performing. Most notably, was when a guy called Cleveland fat and was not only insulted back but also shot dead, later on.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: Rallo worries having Cleveland as his only role model will make him become an overweight gay loser, to which Junior replies "That's crazy talk, sugar."
  • In Memoriam: This episode becomes dedicated to Julia Roberts after she suddenly dies on set.
  • Laugh Track: This episode was performed in front of a live studio audience.
  • Live Episode: This episode is portrayed as one, and it makes fun of all the accidents that happen during these things, such as actors having meltdowns, stage fright, and injuries.
  • Making Use of the Twin: At the end of the episode, two Rallos are visible, taking a jab at how child characters are usually played by intermittent twins, due to child labor laws.
  • No Fourth Wall: This entire episode was a fourth wall breaking episode, portraying The Cleveland Show as a live-action sitcom.
  • Out of Focus: Lampshaded. Roberta gets pissed off with the fact that after the first scene, her character gets completely abandoned. Afterward, she walks onto the set a bunch of times, interrupting scenes, making rants, and destroying things, out of anger and spite.
  • Queer People Are Funny: A gag involves Junior acting like a flamboyant homosexual.
  • Special Guest: Julia Roberts.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Lampshaded. Roberta's side plot is built up at the beginning of the episode, but it gets cut for time, which she is not too happy about.
